August 6, 2007 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels scored five runs over the final three inning to overcome a 3-0 Clinton lead and take the final game of a home-and-home commuter series 5-3 on Monday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids.

The Kernels cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth inning as Matt Sweeney lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Peter Bourjos from third. Mark Trumbo followed that up with an opposite field home run, his 11th of the season.

The Kernels tied the game in the bottom of the seventh as Bourjos singled to right field with two outs to score Ryan Mount from third. They took the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring two unearned runs of Clinton reliever Ivan Izquierdo (2-2) to make the final 5-3 Kernels.

Peter Bourjos was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Ryan Mount was 2 for 4 with a double. Hank Conger was 1 for 4 with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth, but pulled up rounding first and was replaced by Brian Walker. His status is day-to-day and will be reviewed on Tuesday.

Kernels starter Tommy Mendoza came through with a quality start, allowing three runs on eight hits over six innings pitched with five strikeouts, but didn't figure in the final decision. Bobby Cassevah (2-1) allowed one hits and struck out two over two innings to get the win and Warner Madrigal retired Clinton in order in the ninth to earn his 11th save.

The Kernels are now 21-22 in the second half and 59-53 overall. They trail Peoria by three games for the final MWL West playoff spot and Quad Cities by 4-1/2 games for first place.

The Kernels now welcome the South Bend Silver Hawks to Veterans Memorial Stadium for four games starting Tuesday night at 7 pm. David Herndon is scheduled to start for the Kernels against Cesar Valdez for South Bend. It will be 1600 ESPN Sports Radio Triple Play Tuesday - fans can enjoy a Triple Play Combo of a regular sandwich, beverage and chips or popcorn for just five bucks all game. Gates open at 6 pm.
