Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities ended their 10-game road trip with another big win on Monday night, moving into a first-place tie thanks to an 8-4 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps at Fifth Third Ballpark.
Quad Cities (25-17, 62-48) won three of four against the Whitecaps to complete their road trip with a 6-4 record, moving into a first-place tie with Beloit atop the Western Division standings. West Michigan (27-16, 65-48) could not contain an offensive barrage on Monday, as the Swing pounded out at least one hit in each inning for a total of 18.
The Whitecaps got on the board first with a run in the opening frame, but the Swing battled back to take a lead in the second.
There were two outs and nobody on when Jared Schweitzer and Oliver Marmol each singled, while a walk to Jose Garcia loaded the bases. Antone DeJesus followed with his second hit of the game - a bloop-single to left that drove home a pair - and Daryl Jones added a groundball single up the middle to plate another run for a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the third, Quad Cities went back to work to chase Whitecaps' starter Jeff Gerbe from the game. Steven Hill reached on an infield single to spark the rally, racing home to score from first after Christian Reyes delivered a double to the wall in left. After a groundout moved Reyes to third with one away, Schweitzer bounced an infield single high in the air against the drawn-in infield in to push the advantage to 5-1.
Brandon Dickson (9-6) recovered from a shaky start to throw five strong innings and pick up the win. Despite allowing hits to four of the first five batters he faced, the 22-year-old from Alabama was able to limit the damage and allow just one run in the opening frame. He did not allow a run the west of the way, yielding one run on six hits to earn his ninth win of the year.
The Swing led by a 6-1 score when West Michigan tightened things up in the bottom of the sixth. Gorkys Hernandez and Jeramy Laster each beat out infield singles against reliever Kyle Sadlowski to open the frame, and the bases were loaded with one out when Audy Ciriaco singled to left to bring home a run. Later in the frame a passed ball allowed another runner to cross the plate, cutting the Swing lead to 6-3.
But Quad Cities got those runs back in the eighth. After Jones notched his third single of the game with a liner to center, Tony Cruz slapped a double down the right field line to score the runner all the way from first. A single and a walk loaded the bases, and Nick Derba then took four straight balls to force in a run for an 8-3 edge.
The Whitecaps tacked on another run in the ninth, but that did not stop Kyle Mura from closing door with two solid innings of relief at the back end of the game.
Gerba (2-1) took the loss for West Michigan, tagged for five runs on nine hits over 2.1 innings of work.
