Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH - In a four game series where the play resembled playoff action, the Dayton Dragons earned a four game split with the Beloit Snappers, taking the final game of the series by a 4-2 score in front of 8,014 at Fifth Third Field. The top two teams in the Midwest League in terms of record battled to a 4-4 split in eight regular season games in 2007.

Beloit got the scoring started with a run in the top of the first inning against former Snapper Alexander Smit (WP, 2-2). Joe Benson started the ballgame with a double to left. One out later, Benson stole third and scored when catcher Eddy Rodriguez threw the ball into left field. The unearned run put the Snappers out to the early 1-0 lead.

Dayton got to Beloit starter Alex Burnett (LP, 6-7) for three runs in the fourth inning. With two outs, Drew Stubbs was at first base after a fielder's choice. Jason Louwsma singled to right, advancing Stubbs to third base. Both Louwsma and Stubbs scored when Denis Phipps blasted a 3-1 pitch way out of the park to left field. Phipps' eighth home run of the season gave the Dragons a 3-1 lead.

Smit was finished after five, and turned it over to Dan Donaldson (ND) and the rest of the Dragons bullpen. Donaldson immediately found himself in trouble in the sixth inning, allowing a single to Chris Parmelee and back-to-back walks to Eli Tintor and Danny Berg to load the bases. Garrett Olson was able to pick up a one-out sacrifice fly to make the game 3-2, but that is all the Snappers could manage in the inning as Donaldson pitched out of the jam.

Dayton got a big insurance run against Jesus Carnevales (ND) in the eighth inning. With two outs, Phipps singled to left field, and went to second on a walk to Eddy Rodriguez. Beloit went to the bullpen again to bring in Aaron Craig (ND), who was rudely greeted when Zack Cozart took his first pitch into left field for an RBI single and a 4-2 lead. Kevin Gunter (SV, 1) made the lead stand up, as he recorded the final nine outs, striking out six of the 11 hitters he faced.

The Dragons head out on the road for an 11-day, 10-game road trip beginning Tuesday night at Quad Cities with an 8:00 PM first pitch. Dayton will give the starting nod to LHP Jamie Arneson (1-2, 3.53 ERA) while the Swing counter with RHP Elvis Hernandez (5-7, 3.89 ERA). 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 7:30 PM. All Dragons games in 2007 are streamed live on the internet via All In Broadcasting at www.daytondragons.com.
