Lansing, MI - For the second straight day, the Lansing Lugnuts batters got the best of Peoria Chiefs pitching in a 14-1 blowout Monday night. The loss sends the Chiefs to 24-19 on the half as they finish an eight game roadtrip 2-6.
The game went into the third scoreless when Lansing took charge against Chiefs starter Jeremy Papelbon. With two outs, Scott Campbell homered over the right field wall for a 1-0 Lugnuts lead. After back to back singles, Jonathan Jaspe made it 3-0 with a double to left field. Paul Franko extended the lead to 5-0 with a long homer down the left field line, his second of the season.
Raul Barron led off the Lugnuts fourth inning with their third homer of the game, a solo shot for a 6-0 advantage. Chris Siegfried relieved Papelbon in the fifth and struck out Travis Snider to start the inning. Jaspe drew a walk and the next two singled to load the bases with one down. Siegfried then walked Barron to force in a run, hit Kevin Nelson to force in a second run and threw a wild pitch as Jaspe scored for a 9-0 Lansing lead. A sacrifice fly from Campbell made it 10-0 before Chris Emanuele singled home a pair.
Peoria finally got on the board against Ray Gonzalez in the sixth. With one out, Brian LeClerc tripled to right center and came home on a groundout from Nate Samson.
Lansing scored their final two runs in the seventh after a leadoff walk, two base error and RBI single. Papelbon went four innings allowing six runs on nine hits. Siegfried gave up six runs on three this and three walks in one inning. Jayson Ruhlman gave up one earned run on three hits and four strikeouts over two innings. Position player Blake Lalli tossed a 1-2-3 eighth.
Gorman's Pub Player of the Game Blake Lalli (DH/P) - Lalli picked up the Chiefs first hit in the fifth and then singled again in the seventh. He also pitched the eighth inning for the Chiefs turning in a 1-2-3 frame. Playoff Watch: The top two teams in the division excluding Beloit and Clinton will make the playoffs. With 27 games remaining, the Chiefs are in the Wild Card spot, 1 ½ game behind Quad Cities and 2 ½ games up on Kane County. The Chiefs have six games (four at home) left against Kane County and two at Quad Cities. The Wild Card team will play Beloit in the first round while the Second Half Champion will play Clinton.
Notes... The Chiefs went from June 25-August 5 without allowing more than right runs in a game but have now given up back to back double digit run games against Lansing...Blake Lalli collected two hits and also pitched the eighth inning...The Chiefs have allowed ten or more runs nine times this season...Peoria now returns home for a four game homestand against the Great Lakes Loons...Tuesday's game will mark the first ever for a Dodgers affiliate in Peoria against the Chiefs...All fans get free hot dogs and popcorn on Tuesday through the 7th inning on Intern Night...RH Robert Hernandez (4-7, 4.63) will start for the Chiefs against LH Paul Coleman (1-2, 4.50) at 7:00 PM...The game can be heard live beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 PM online at www.peoriachiefs.com or on WOAM 1350.
