Kernels pick up fourth shutout of homestand, 4-0, over Great Lakes

April 14, 2008 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels pitching staff picked up their fourth shutout in their last seven home games, 4-0, over the Great Lakes Loons at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Monday night.

Mason Tobin, A.J. Ford and Ysmael Carmona scattered seven hits and struck out six as Tobin improved his record to 2-0 on the season.

The Kernels only managed four hits with the big blow being a 2 RBI triple by Tyler Johnson in the Kernels fourth inning. Jay Brossman extended his hitting streak to 11 games and Jeremy Moore and Gordie Gronkowski had the other two hits for the Kernels.

Great Lakes starter Justin Miller (1-1) allowed three unearned runs on four hits and struck out five over 4.1 innings. Jon Dutton came on to close out the game, giving up an unearned run and striking out five with three walks.

Game two of this three game set between the Kernels and Loons is Tuesday night at 6:30 pm. It will be a 1600 ESPN Sports Radio Triple Play Tuesday where fans can purchase a combo meal consisting of a sandwich, snack and beverage for $6.

It's also the Kernels Ribs and Beer Fest on the Randy Kuehl Honfidence Pavilion. For $25, plus the cost of a ticket, enjoy all you can eat ribs, along with coleslaw and baked beans, plus all you can drink beer from when the gates open at 5:30 pm, until the end of the 7th inning.
