Lansing Lugnuts News Release
Burlington, Iowa- For the first time this season, the Lansing Lugnuts have dropped consecutive games after losing 6-2 to the Burlington Bees Monday night at Community Field. Lansing is now 1-3 on the current road trip.
The Bees struck early and often, plating four runs in the first inning to catapult themselves ahead of the visiting Lugnuts. Alwin Perez's one out double started the rally for Burlington. David Lough then reached on an infield single to put runners at the corners. Jason Taylor's RBI groundout scored Perez to put the Bees up 1-0. After Clint Robinson walked, Jamar Walton was able to reach base when Lansing third baseman Kevin Ahrens dropped a pop-up. The error allowed Lough to score to make it 2-0.
Burlington continued to pile on in the frame when Shawn Hayes smoked an RBI double into left-center field to push the lead to 3-0. Ryan Eigsti's infield single capped the scoring in the frame for the Bees at 4-0.
Lansing tried to make a comeback by scoring once in the third and fourth innings. Darin Mastroianni had an RBI triple in the third and John Tolisano tripled and scored in the fourth to cut the lead in half, but it was as close as Lansing could get.
The Bees scored twice more in the fifth on Walton's two-run double to right-center field, putting the game out of reach for Lansing at 6-2.
Danny Gutierrez (1-0) notched the win for the Bees, throwing five innings and allowing two runs on four hits. He fanned eight batters in the start and walked four.
Trystan Magnuson (0-2) shouldered the loss for the Lugnuts after giving up all four runs in the first. Only one of the four runs was earned to Magnuson.
Lansing (7-4) and Burlington (5-6) will play the second game of the series on Tuesday night. Righty Kyle Ginley (1-0, 2.45) will take the hill for the Lugnuts. He will be opposed by the Bees' Matt Mitchell (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
