The Peoria Chiefs earned a 4-0 shut out win over the visiting West Michigan Whitecaps on Monday evening at O'Brien Field. The win improves the Chiefs to 5-7 on the season and hands the Whitecaps their fourth straight loss.
With the game scoreless, the Chiefs scored in the third after going 16 2/3 innings without a run. Jovan Rosa reached on an error by shortstop Audy Ciriaco, and a balk from starting pitcher Ramon Garcia moved him into scoring position. After a Kyler Burke single put two runners on, Cliff Andersen delivered an RBI infield single to make it 1-0.
Peoria got to Garcia again in the fifth inning after Burke started the inning with a single. After Andersen struck out, Drew Rundle worked a walk to give the Chiefs two runners on with one out. Nate Samson lined a double down the left field line to score Burke and extend the Chiefs lead to 2-0. Marwin Gonzalez lined into a double play to end the rally, the third line-drive double play turned by the Whitecaps in the game's first five innings.
The Chiefs extended their lead in the seventh with a home run into right field from Burke, giving him his second run of the game. Andersen followed with a double and was driven home on a suicide squeeze bunt from Samson.
Rhee shut the Whitecaps down over six innings allowing just three singles and three walks. The South Korean native struck out three and didn't allow a runner past first base after the first inning. Marcos Mateo picked up the three-inning save, the first as a member of the Chiefs, while striking out the last six batters he faced.
Player of the Game - Dae-Eun Rhee (RHP) and Kyler Burke (RF) - Burke scored for the Chiefs in the fifth, advancing the Chiefs' lead to 2-0 over the Whitecaps. He added another run in the seventh with a solo home run, his first of the year, which extended the lead to 3-0. Overall, Burke went 3-for-3, with two singles and two runs scored. Rhee threw a career-high six innings, striking out three and allowing just three hits en route to his third consecutive win.
Notes... Rhee has thrown 8 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings spanning his last two starts...Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to three games...Jovan Rosa had a four-game hitting streak halted...Peoria did not commit an error for the first time in seven games...
