Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

GRAND CHUTE, WI -- Lance Zawadzki's three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh gave the Fort Wayne pitching tandem of Rob Woodard and Geoff Vandel more than enough support in a 5-1 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Monday night. Woodard and Vandel combined to strike out thirteen and allowed one run on four hits on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Rattler starter Donnie Hume matched Woodard zero for zero through the first four innings. But, it was good defense by the Timber Rattlers that kept the game scoreless in the top of the fifth inning. Luis Durango lined the ball over the head of Daniel Carroll. The Rattler centerfielder came up empty on a dive and the ball rolled to the fence. Durango attempted to stretch a triple into an inside-the-park homer, but a strong relay throw from second baseman Edilio Colina cut down Durango at the plate to keep the game scoreless.

Woodard kept Rattler hitters off balance as he worked six scoreless frames allowing just two hits and no Rattler runner past second base. He struck out seven and walked one.

The Wizards (3-9) broke through in the top of the seventh inning against Phillippe Aumont. A two-out RBI single by Drew Cumberland knocked in the first run of the game. Zawadzki was next and he lined a home run just to the right of the batter's eye in centerfield for a three-run homer and a 4-0 lead.

Fort Wayne tacked on a run in the eighth inning on a two-out single by Durango.

Wisconsin (3-5) spoiled the shutout in the bottom of the ninth inning. Rob Garth tripled with one out. Alex Liddi drove him in with an RBI grounder. But, that was all Vandel would allow on the night. He got the final out to complete his three inning save.

Game two of the series is Tuesday night. Rob Harmon is scheduled to make his second start of the season for the Timber Rattlers. Brandon Gomes will make his second start of 2008 for the Wizards. Game time on a 'Bang for Your Buck' Tuesday is 6:35pm.
