
Kernels get first win, 5-1, over Swing

The Cedar Rapids Kernels picked up their first win of the 2007 season, defeating the Swing of the Quad Cities, 5-1, in front of 1,549 fans at John O'Donnel Stadium on Monday afternoon.
Chris Pettit hit a solo home run in the first, the second home run for the Kernels in as many games, as the Kernels led from wire to wire. Pettit finished the game 2-4 as the Kernels had seven hits on the day.
Kernels starter Jeremy Haynes (1-0) scattered eight hits over 5-1/3 innings to pick up the win. Haynes walked only one and struck out three. Four Kernels, Pedro Herrera, Barret Browning, Warner Madrigal and Robert Romero combined to allow one run over the final 3-2/3 innings.
Starter Mike Schellinger (0-1) struck out six over three innings, but was tagged with the loss. The Swing stranded 10 runners and struck out 13 Kernels.
Matt Sweeney had a double and was the only Kernel other that Pettitt with an extra-base hit. The Kernels finished the day with four stolen bases.
The Kernels and Swing play game 2 tomorrow evening at John O'Donnel Stadium before Cedar Rapids returns home to start the 2007 season with a noon game on Wednesday versus Burlington. The first 1,000 fans get a free mini-bat from Collins Community Credit Union and 2007 Magnet Schedules from Mercy Community Physicians.
