Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities pitching staff combined to punch out 13 opposing hitters, but also stranded 10 men on base in a 5-1 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The home-opening game drew 1,549 excited fans to John O'Donnell Stadium, as the baseball season has officially returned to Davenport in 2007.
Quad Cities (1-3) got strong pitching performances from a pair of hurlers who had not pitched since 2005 due to injury, as Mike Schellinger and Shaun Garceau combined for 11 strikeouts in 5.2 innings. Cedar Rapids (1-1) starter Jeremy Haynes (1-0) was touched for eight hits over 5.1 frames, but held the Swing out of the scoring column to pick up the win.
Schellinger (0-1) got the start for the Swing and dominated the Kernels despite allowing an early solo home run to Chris Pettit in the top of the first. That longball proved to be the only hit Schellinger allowed, as the righty struck out six of the next nine batters that he faced. Though the early home run saddled him with the loss, Schellinger fanned six over three innings of work on the day while allowing just one hit.
Quad Cities struggled to convert a number of offensive opportunities early, however, stranding five men on base - four of which were in scoring position - over the first three innings. The Swing also loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but when Luke Gorsett's hard-hit liner went right to the second-baseman, the Kernels were able to double up Donovan Solano at first to get out of the jam.
Swing reliever Matt Lane came on after Schellinger and tossed two hitless innings, followed by Garceau's first appearance of the season. The 19-year-old registered 5 strikeouts in 2.2 frames, allowing two runs - one earned - on two hits.
Cedar Rapids added an unearned run in the sixth and two more scores in the eighth, building a 4-0 lead before the Swing could strike. Daryl Jones scored the only Quad Cities run in the bottom of the eighth after drawing a walk and stealing second, crossing the plate on Brandon Buckman's two-out single through the left side.
Mark Shorey and Omar Falcon each went 2-for-4 in the ballgame, as Falcon raised his season average to .357.
