Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in their 2007 home opener at Elfstrom Stadium, but the Beloit Snappers eventually caught up and handed the Cougars a 5-4 defeat in front of 2,191 fans.
Alex Valdez roped a second-inning, run-scoring single off Snappers starter Alex Burnett in his first plate appearance of the season to bring in Jake Smith, and then Mike Affronti doubled to score Valdez for a 2-0 game.
Cougars starter James Heuser weaved through three scoreless innings before Chris Parmelee smashed a homer in the fourth for a 2-1 count. Heuser left later in the inning, allowing one run on one hit, fanning two but walking four over 3 2/3 innings. Christian Vitters recorded his first RBI of the year in the fifth on a fielder's choice to give the Cougars a 3-1 advantage, but Beloit handled most of the offense the rest of the way.
Jason Fernandez gave up two tallies in the sixth, and Scott Moore surrendered a two-run homer in the seventh to Danny Valencia to put Beloit ahead, 5-3. Mike Massaro's run-scoring grounder in the seventh accounted for the final run of the day and the 5-4 finish.
Danny Vais (1-0) took home the win for the Snappers (2-0) while Sean Land got his first save, and Scott Moore (1-0) hooked the loss for the Cougars (0-3). Game 2 of the four-game series is Tuesday at noon CDT. John Herrera will face Jose Lugo.
