Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (April 9, 2007) - Dollar Monday and Ryne Sandberg drew a big early season crowd to Community Field, but it was the pitchers that took the spotlight. Peoria starter Rafael Dolis struck out eight in five innings and the Burlington Bees (2-1) stranded four runners in scoring position, including one in the ninth inning, in the Chiefs (2-0) 2-1 victory. Peoria has now won seven straight games at Community Field over the last two seasons.

The Chiefs scored a run in the second and another in the third against Bees' starter Mario Santiago (0-1). In the second, Yusuf Carter doubled off the wall in right and scored on a two-out double by D.J. Lewis. In the third, Matt Camp led off with a bunt single and scored on a double by Andrew Lopez. Santiago worked through five innings and allowed just one other hit while walking none and fanning two, but got the loss. Matt Campbell returned to the mound in a regular season game for the first time since July 2, 2005 and finished the final four innings. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out four. Campbell's missed all of last season due to shoulder surgery.

The 19-year-old Dolis (1-0) pitched like a veteran. He allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out eight and it was his own throwing error on an attempted pick-off that led to the Bees only run in the fifth. LF Joe Dickerson led off with a single and went to third when Dolis' pick-off throw skipped in the dirt and rolled down to the right field bullpen. After a popout and a walk, Dickerson scored on a wild pitch before getting out of the inning.

Jose Pina hit Chris McConnell to start the sixth and moved him to second on a wild pitch, but the Bees stranded him there. Jayson Ruhlman retired all six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings before the Bees mounted one last threat against Rocky Roquet in the ninth. 2B Kurt Mertins reached on a broken bat dribbler on the infield to start the inning and then stole second. 3B Marc Maddox moved him to third with a groundout to second and 1B Jase Turner drew a four-pitch walk. With the tying and winning runs on base, Roquet struck out Dickerson and C Brady Everett to end the game and pick up his first win of the season.

The Bees and Chiefs will wrap up this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Harold Mozingo will make his Bees debut against RH Jose Ceda of the Chiefs. The gates will open at 6:00 for the first Hawk Eye 2-for-Tuesday of the year. Fans can bring the coupon from the morning Hawk Eye and get two general admission tickets for the price of one. All fans can take advantage of the two-for-one sandwich special in the concession stand. The game will also be broadcast on Newsradio 1490 KBUR and 1360 The Ticket, the Bees Radio Network, with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
