Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities and MidwestOne Bank announced the "Homers for Hearn" program on Monday, a season-long campaign to raise funds for paralyzed Rock Island football player Travis Hearn. Each organization will contribute matching donations to start the program with $5,000 in the bank, and are asking residents of the Quad Cities to pitch in as well.

Hearn, who was paralyzed from the neck down after suffering a serious spinal chord injury during a football game in September of 2006, has received an overwhelming show of support from the Quad Cities community. The Swing and MidwestOne Bank are encouraged by that support and want to contribute to him and his family.

"We're excited to be involved in a great community effort," said Brian Cornwell, Market President of MidwestOne Bank in the Quad Cities. "I think the community has done a great job of supporting him and his family, and we're proud to be a part of it."

Residents are asked to pledge a "per home run amount" to the program of as little as one penny, and would then donate that amount for every Swing home run hit in 2007. Based on last year's total of 90 home runs, a pledge of one penny would potentially cost each resident only 90 cents while accumulating a total of nearly $34,000 for Hearn and his family. Residents may also pledge a total amount, as all donations are welcome.

"We want to be more active in the community and have a real impact on the quality of life here," said Swing General Manager Ben Burke. "This is a perfect opportunity for us to do that, and when the idea of 'Homers for Hearn' came up we jumped at the opportunity to get it started."

Fans can sign up to participate in the "Homers for Hearn" program at all Swing games or at MidwestOne Bank's downtown Davenport location.
