Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Cedar Rapids erased an early 4-run Peoria lead for the 2nd straight day, but couldn't complete consecutive comebacks, losing 9-6 in 10 innings on Sunday. Kevin Moesquit, who reached base in all 5 of his plate appearances, had the game-tying hit in the 9th. After a pinch-hit double by Gary Mitchell to left-center put Abel Baker at 3rd ahead of Mitchell, Moesquit hit a nearly identical ball to Mitchell's resulting a 2-RBI double.
But after the next two Kernels (19-24) hitters were retired, momentum swung toward the Chiefs (20-23) - who needed a season high in hits (15) and runs (9) to get the victory. In the top of the 10th, the first two Peoria batters combined for the go-ahead run, when Taylor Davis doubled and then scored on an Anthony Giansanti single. The Chiefs tacked on two more on a Pin-Chieh Chen double to push the game to its final score.
After falling down 4-0 before even coming to bat, the Kernels slowly climbed back into the game. Kaleb Cowart quickly chipped into the Peoria lead with his 32nd RBI of the year. With 1 out and Kevin Moesquit on second base, the Kernels third baseman hit a ball back up the middle for the first Cedar Rapids run, cutting the Peoria deficit down to 4-1.
Cowart added two more RBI to his resume with a single in the 5th inning. With runners in both scoring positions, the Adel, Georgia native ripped the first pitch of the at-bat from Concepcion through the left side of the infield, scoring Moesquit and Ryan Jones to get the Kernels 4th run of the game. Unfortunately for Cedar Rapids, Peoria had added two more by then, and the score was at 6-4.
Chevy Clarke also batted in a run - his 3rd in as many games - with a 2-out single in the fourth inning which scored RF Andy Workman. The bulk of the visitors scoring was in the first inning, in which Peoria scored the first 4 runs of the game on 3 hits and a sacrifice fly. Starter Eswarlin Jimenez lasted 4.1 innings before Logan Odom and Joe Melioris combined to finish the game. Odom struck out 3 without allowing a run in his 2.2 innings.
Melioris (3-2) took the loss for the Kernels, while Ben Wells (3-2) earned the win for Peoria after blowing the save in the 9th inning.
