Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Sean Buckley belted a home run and double while Ryan Wright had three hits to lead the Dayton Dragons to a 6-4 victory over the Great Lakes Loons on Sunday afternoon. A crowd of 8,769 saw the game at Fifth Third Field.
The Dragons built an early 4-1 lead over the first two innings. They scored two unearned runs in the first inning, keyed by a lead-off double by Juan Perez and two Great Lakes errors. In the second, Buckley belted a two-run home run to left field, his third homer of the year.
Great Lakes battled back to tie the game in the fifth inning when O'Koyea Dickson hit a three-run opposite field home run off the foul pole in right field with two outs and two men on base.
The Dragons regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Wright doubled into the right field bullpen area, went to third on Kyle Waldrop's ground out to second base, and scored on Yovan Gonzalez's sacrifice fly to shallow right. Wright scored with a great head-first slide just ahead of the tag by the Great Lakes catcher to make it 5-4. The Dragons a run in the seventh when Steve Selsky singled, went to second on Wright's single, to third on Kyle Waldrop's sacrifice, and scored on Gonzalez's ground out to make it 6-4 and close out the scoring.
Dragons starting pitcher Tanner Robles (3-2) worked the first five innings, allowing five hits and four runs with three walks and four strikeouts to earn the win.
James Allen replaced Robles to start the sixth inning and retired all six batters he faced with two strikeouts. Mike Dennhardt worked a scoreless eighth inning, and Kyle McMyne tossed a perfect ninth for his second save.
The Dragons had a very efficient day at the plate. They collected nine hits, but also added three sacrifice bunts, a sacrifice fly, and an RBI ground out to produce the six runs, their highest total since April 28 at Beloit. Seven of their 24 outs advanced runners. Wright was 3 for 4 with a run scored, Perez had two doubles. Selsky had two hits, and Buckley had the homer, double, and walk, going 2 for 3.
The Dragons (16-28) and the Loons (23-21) close out the series on Monday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Stalin Gerson (1-3, 4.10) will start for Dayton against Great Lakes' Arismendy Ozoria (3-0, 3.67). The Dragons do not play on Tuesday before opening a three-game set at Lansing Wednesday night.
