
Kernels complete sweep of Wisconsin, 5-2

The Cedar Rapids Kernels completed a three game sweep of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 5-2, at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Friday night and also took a step closer to clinching home field throughout the MWL Playoffs. Gabe Jacobo went 2-4 with a three run triple as Alexi Amarista and Roberto Lopez both went 3-5 with a run scored.
Kernels starter Will Smith (10-5) notched his 10th win of the season, allowing a run on just two hits and striking out five over eight innings. Andrew Taylor allowed a run on two hits and struck out two over an inning in a non-save situation. Wisconsin starter Trey Watten (5-14) allowed five runs on nine hits over six innings in taking the loss.
The Kernels pounded out 12 hits in the game as Matt Crawford was 1-3 with a double and RBI and Angel Castillo was 2-4 with a double and two runs scored. Brock Kjeldgaard hit his 20th home run off Smith in the fourth inning and John Delaney added a sac fly in the ninth.
The playoff bound Kernels return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 5th and open a three game series with the Burlington Bees to wrap up the 2009 MWL regular season. Gates open at 5:30 pm as the first 500 fans through the gates receive a free Kernels visor from the Best Western Longbranch. And after the game, enjoy a spectacular FIREWORKS show.
