Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs end their last regular season home game with a loss to the Kane County Cougars, 6-3 Friday night at O'Brien Field. The Chiefs travel to Clinton for their last series of the regular season on Saturday. Peoria will host game one of the 2009 playoffs at O'Brien Field on September 9 at 6:30 pm against the Cedar Rapids Kernels.
Starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx struggled for the first time this season, giving up two runs in the first. With one down, Nino Leyja doubled and with Steve Parker batting, stole third. After Parker walked, Franklin Hernandez grounded into a force out at second to plate Leyja. Jeremy Barfield doubled to advance Hernandez to third. Petey Paramore was issued a walk to load the bases and Tyler Ladendorf singled to score Hernandez to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
The Chiefs answered back and tied the game in the second. Michael Brenly led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a ground out by Junior Lake. Jose Valdez doubled to score Brenly and with David Macias batting, stole third. Macias hit a sacrifice fly to plate Valdez and tie the game 2-2. Peoria took their first lead of the game in the fifth. Macias led off the inning with a double and scored on Flaherty's 81st RBI of the season to give the Chiefs a 3-2 lead.
The Cougars regained the lead in the sixth. Parker began the inning with a single and advanced to second on a single by Chris Berroa. Barfield singled to plate Parker and advance Berroa to third. Paramore hit into a double play but Berroa scored to give the Cougars a 4-3 advantage. Reliever Josh Whitlock replaced Bibens-Dirkx and gave up a home run to Ladendorf to increase Kane County's lead to 5-3.
Peoria's closer Chris Huseby came in to throw the ninth and gave up a rare run. With one down, Connor Crumbliss doubled and advanced to third on a single by Leyja. With Parker batting, Leyja stole second and Parker hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Crumbliss and add to their lead 6-3. Paul Smyth retired the Chiefs in order in the ninth to end the game.
Bibens-Dirkx had a rare struggle, giving up four runs on seven hits in his 5 2/3 innings of work. The right-hander walked two while striking out three. Whitlock threw 2 1/3 innings of relief, giving up one run on three hits while not issuing a walk and striking out two. Huseby threw one inning, giving up one run on two hits while not issuing a walk and striking out two.
