Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - A.J. Jimenez lined a two-run go-ahead double off of closer Tyler Stohr, capping off a three-run eighth inning and catapulting the Lansing Lugnuts (27-40; 53-83) to a 4-3 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps' (38-29; 81-56) before a crowd of 9,972 in the Lugnuts' home finale at Oldsmobile Park.
Trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the eighth, Johermyn Chavez drew a lead-off walk against reliever Melvin Mercedes (0-1). With one out, Balbino Fuenmayor doubled in Chavez to shave the deficit to 3-2. Mercedes issued a walk to Justin McClanahan and was pulled in favor of Stohr. The right-hander's first pitch to Jimenez was laced down the left-field line, scoring both Fuenmayor and McClanahan.
Dustin Antolin (2-5) recorded the final six outs to earn the victory, pitching around a Jordan Lennerton lead-off single in the ninth inning.
West Michigan had led throughout the game, taking the early lead on a two-run first inning against Lugnuts starter Chad Beck.
Beck settled down after the rough start, allowing eight hits and three runs over seven innings while striking out six batters.
In his fourth start against the Lugnuts in 2009, Whitecaps starter Luke Putkonen allowed only an unearned run on three hits in 5 2/3 innings. Putkonen finished the season without allowing an earned run to Lansing in 23 2/3 innings.
The Lugnuts are off on Saturday before finishing the 2009 season with 2:00 p.m. games at South Bend on Sunday and Monday.
