July 3, 2022 - Midwest League (MWL)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Appleton, WI - The Cedar Rapids Kernels dropped their fifth straight game on Sunday afternoon 5-4 to Wisconsin, chasing the Timber Rattler starter after three but failing to scratch across another run against the bullpen. Alerick Soularie had four hits in five at-bats while Wander Javier and Kyler Fedko each provided a pair of knocks on the afternoon. Of the Kernels' five losses, three have been decided by one run, two by two runs and one by three. Cedar Rapids falls to 45-30, 2-7 in the second half.
The Kernels quickly responded to an unearned Timber Rattler run in the first as Seth Gray singled home Charles Mack in the second. Back-to-back Wisconsin solo shots in the second made it 3-1 entering the third, then Will Holland crushed a go-ahead three-run homer to left. The Timber Rattlers knotted things at 4-4 with a run of their own in the bottom of the third before both bullpens took over.
Tyler Palm carved over 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, striking out four and allowing just two baserunners on a hit and a walk. Matthew Swain likewise threw extremely well, allowing just one run on two hits over 3.0 innings of work while striking out three.
The Timber Rattler bullpen held Cedar Rapids to four hits while walking none and striking out seven over 6.0 scoreless innings.
The Kernels return home on Monday evening for their 4th of July game against Quad Cities at 6:35 p.m. CT at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
