Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers concluded one of the most successful homestands in team history with a 5-4 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Wisconsin went 10-2 in the twelve game homestand as they went 5-1 against the Quad Cities River Bandits to start the stretch and 5-1 against the Kernels with five straight wins to finish the two-weeks at home.
The Timber Rattlers (44-30 overall, 8-1 second half) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead. Darrien Miller reached on an error with one out and Joe Gray Jr walked. Tristan Peters followed with a single to center to score Miller for the 1-0 lead.
Cedar Rapids (45-30, 2-7) evened the score in the top of the second inning with a two-out, RBI single by Seth Gray.
Wisconsin went back into the lead in the bottom of the second inning when Ashton McGee and Antonio Piñero hit back-to-back home runs to start the inning. McGee hit a towering home run to the Home Run Porch in right. Two pitches later, Piñero lined a home run off the video board and the Rattlers were up 3-1.
Will Holland gave the Kernels the lead in the top of the third on a three-run home run with two outs.
Zavier Warren tied the game in the bottom of the third. Tristan Peters drew a walk to start the frame. Warren lined a double to right to score Peters. The hit also moved Warren's current hitting streak to ten games. The Timber Rattlers would load the bases later in the inning but were unable to take the lead.
The bullpens took over the middle of the game and settled down the offenses. Brady Schanuel worked three scoreless frames with four strikeouts and no walks for the Timber Rattlers. Tyler Palm got out of the jam left to him in the bottom of the third without allowing a run and worked a scoreless fourth and fifth. Matthew Swain tossed a perfect sixth and seventh for the Kernels with Rattlers reliever Tyler Gillies pitching around a one-out single in the top of the seventh in between.
Cam Robinson, the Wisconsin closer, entered the game in the top of the eighth. He allowed a lead-off single to Wander Javier, but nothing else.
Swain retired the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the eighth. Arbert Cipion kept the inning alive with a ground rule double to right and that brought Tyler Black to the plate.
Black dropped a single to center on a 1-2 pitch and Cipion raced home with the go-ahead run.
Robinson went back out for the top of the ninth and got the first two outs. Alerick Soularie kept the Kernels alive with a bloop single to right for his fourth hit of the game. The bloop didn't bother Robinson. He came back to strike out Yunior Severino looking to give the Timber Rattlers their fifth win in a row.
The Rattlers are 28-11 at home this season and they have reached a season-high fourteen games over .500 in their overall record.
The Timber Rattlers are in action on Independence Day when they face the South Bend Cubs at Four Winds Field in South Bend, Indiana on Monday night. Justin Jarvis (6-3, 3.96) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers on Monday. The Cubs have named Daniel Palencia (1-2, 3.80) as their starter. Game time is 6:05 pm CDT. The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM and internet audio starting with the pregame show at 5:45pm. This game is also available to MiLB.tv subscribers.
