Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Howie Kendrick doubled, homered and drove in four runs to power the Kernels past the West Michigan Whitecaps, 6-4, Saturday night in a Midwest League baseball game played before a crowd of 2,394 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Kendrick doubled home a run in the first inning. His three-run home run in the second inning gave the Kernels a 5-1 lead. The Kernels' final run scored when Kendrick hit into a double play in the fourth inning, which by rule is not an RBI.

Kendrick was 3-for-3, including a game-inning two-run double, in the Kernels' 3-2 win Friday. He is batting .364 for the season, but remains 50 plate appearances shy of the number necessary to qualify for the Midwest League batting title. He still has a chance to win the title if the number of plate appearances he is shy is added to his at-bat total and his average is better than the league leader. The league leader coming into Saturday was Peoria's Brendan Ryan at .318. Kendrick's adjusted average, adding an 0-for-50 to his totals, is .313.

Nick Kimpton extended his hitting streak to five straight games with a 3-for-4 performance Saturday. He is 7-for-16 since rejoining the Kernels on Aug. 31, after playing on Australia's silver-medal winning baseball team at the Athens Olympic Games.

Ronnie Ray (3-0) allowed seven hits and four runs in 5.1 innings and was the winner. Only one of the runs was earned. He has allowed only two earned runs in 20.2 innings since joining the Kernels from Provo on Aug. 13.

Wayne Hedden pitched two hitless innings of relief to end the game and collected his second save, but his first since May 20.

The Kernels (32-36 second half, 74-63 overall) won back-to-back home games for the first time since July 24-25. They are 34-33 at home this season with games remaining Sunday and Monday.

West Michigan (39-29, 68-69) had its Eastern Division lead sliced to one game with two games remaining. The Whitecaps lost their third straight game, but it was only their eighth loss in their last 33 games.

NIBLETS – Sunday is Hall of Fame Day. Members of the class of 2004 will be honored before the game. It also is Toyota Reader Recognition Day. Iowa Office Supply is giving out 1,000 pennants, and Alliant Energy 2,000 hand fans. Myron Noodleman also will be on hand to entertain during the games. Fans can play catch on the field after the game. ... Kernels games can be heard on The Zone, ESPN Radio 1600 AM with John Rodgers.
