Clinton shuts out Swing
September 4, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Clinton LumberKings broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the seventh inning as they defeated the Swing of the Quad Cities, 3-0, on Saturday night at John O'Donnell Stadium. The loss puts the Swing in a difficult situation, as they need wins in each of their two final games plus some help from the Beloit Snappers to qualify for the wild card. Clinton clinched the MWL-West's second half championship with the victory.
After each team had baserunners thrown out at the plate in the fifth inning, Clinton broke the tie in the top of the seventh inning. Josh Kreuzer singled into center, and scored on Justin Hatcher's double down the left field line. With two outs, Brandon Cashman singled into left to plate Hatcher for a 2-0 LumberKings lead.
Clinton added an unearned in the top of the seventh inning, when Abigail Sandoval led off with a single. After a sacrifice bunt resulted in a wild throw down the right field line, Kreuzer's sacrifice fly scored Sandoval for a 3-0 lead.
The Swing brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth, but Brian Mattoon got a strikeout to end the threat. Mattoon worked eight scoreless innings in the longest outing of the year for a Clinton pitcher to get the victory.
Glen Perkins worked five strong innings for the Swing, striking out six while allowing no runs on two base hits. In nine starts this season, the first-round pick from Stillwater, Minnesota, has gone 2-1 with a 1.30 ERA.
Crawford picked up the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) in three frames, while Peter Tautor finished it up with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
UP NEXT: The Swing and LumberKings continue the series on Sunday night, as Scott Tyler (6-4, 2.76) takes the mound against Jose Garcia (2-2, 2.89). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00, and pregame coverage on Great Country 105 will begin at 6:45.
PROMOTION: Sunday night will be the final fireworks show of the season, sponsored by Great Country 105! Tickets are available to remaining Swing games by calling (563) 328-2000.
