CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa â The road to a fourth Midwest League championship for a Cedar Rapids baseball club begins Wednesday at Clinton.
The Kernels will face the Clinton LumberKings in the best-of-3, first-round series. Clinton clinched its playoff spot Saturday night when it shutout Quad Cities, 3-0, at Davenport.
The LumberKings will host Game 1 on Wednesday at Alliant Energy Field at a time to be announced. Game 2 is Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Game 3, if necessary, will be played Friday at noon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Clinton (38-30) trails Kane County by one game in the second-half Western Division race with two games remaining. Kane County and the Kernels clinched playoff berths by finishing 1-2 in the West in the first half.
The Kernels are 7-9 against Clinton this season, including a 3-5 mark on the road. The LumberKings were 6-2 against the Kernels in second half, winning three of four games on the road and at home.
The winner of the Kernels-Clinton series advances to play the winner of Kane County's series against a to be determined foe in the Western Division championship series. The Cougars will play Peoria, Quad Cities or Beloit.
Peoria (35-33) needs to win one of its two remaining games against Beloit (34-34) to clinch the remaining berth. The Chiefs own the tiebreaker if they deadlock with Quad Cities.
Beloit gets in if its beats Peoria twice and Quad Cities loses one of its two remaining games against Clinton.
Quad Cities qualifies, via a tiebreaker, if it beats Clinton twice and Beloit beats Peoria twice.
The winner of the best-of-3 Division series advances to the best-of-5 League Championship Series against the Eastern Division winner.
Cedar Rapids won Midwest League titles in 1988, 1992 and 1994.
