
Bees Eliminated from Playoff Race

Burlington, IA - Any hopes the Burlington Bees (33-35, 55-83) had of reaching the postseason were squashed tonight in a 4-2 loss to the South Bend Silver Hawks (34-34, 76-62) at Community Field tonight. The Bees are now 0-6 against South Bend this year.
The Bees got out early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Brandon Powell doubled and scored on a single by Chris Lubanski. Lubanski went to third on a throwing error by shortstop Alberto Gonzalez, went to third on a bounce out by Kila Kaaihue, and scored on an infield single by Alan Moye. The Bees didn't score again as starter Chad Scarbery (12-9) worked through six innings for the win. Ryan Coffin, Doug Slaten, and Dustin Glant each worked a scoreless inning in relief to finish the game with Glant earning his eighth save.
The Silver Hawks tied the score with two runs in the top of the second off of Bees' starter Ambiorix Burgos (7-11). Augie Murillo doubled and scored after a passed ball and wild pitch. With one out, Gonzalez was hit by a pitch and scored on a triple by Jereme Milons as Moye fell down trying to track down the line drive to right. The Silver Hawks took the lead in the third. Alex Frazier doubled and scored on a single by Edgar Varela. He final run came against Burgos in the fifth on an RBI single by Murillo to drive in Frazier who had walked to start the inning. It was the only walk allowed by Burgos through five innings, but it put him into the Midwest League lead with 75 allowed on the year. He also struck out seven to finish second in the league with 172. Nate Moore pitched three scoreless innings in relief and Gabe DeHoyos finished it off with a scoreless ninth.
The Bees and Silver Hawks continue this series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00. RH Carlos Rosa (0-4, 4.40) will start for the Bees against RH Jared Liebeck (4-2, 3.06) for the Silver Hawks. The gates open at 1:00 for Louisa Communications Kids Day. Little Leaguers and Boy and Girl Scouts in uniform get in free. A church bulletin gets $2 off admission for each member of your family. Kitchen's Plus will give away a baseball glove and kids can run the bases after the game. The game will also be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 1:40.
