Kemp Named TL Player of the Week

CORPUS CHRISTI - Second baseman Tony Kemp earned Texas League Player of the Week honors for June 30-July 6, league president Tom Kayser announced Monday. The Vanderbilt product hit .500 (11-for-22) with three runs scored, two doubles, a triple, a home run and five RBIs.

Kemp capped the week in style Sunday against Tulsa, when he registered Corpus Christi's fifth four-hit game of the season.

A native of Franklin, Tenn., Kemp joined the team June 25 at Springfield and has since started every game at second base. Overall he is hitting .400 with eight runs scored, six runs batted in and a .472 on-base percentage.

Named a Mid-Season California League All-Star with Lancaster, Kemp hit .336 with four home runs, 37 RBIs, 28 stolen bases and a .433 OBP in 72 games for the Jet Hawks. He earned CL Player of the Week recognition for May 5-12 after he hit .548 in 31 at-bats.

Selected by Houston in the fifth round of the 2013 draft, Kemp was named SEC Player of the Year and was a consensus First Team All-American after a senior year for the Commodores in which he batted .391 with 33 RBIs and 34 stolen bases.

Upon being drafted Kemp split the rest of 2013 between Tri-City and Quad-Cities, hitting a combined .273 in 75 games. He is the Astros' first 2013 selection to reach Double-A.

Kemp is the first Hook to win league player of the week honors. Mike Hauschild and Tommy Shirley have each been named Texas League Pitcher of the Week.
