Frisco RoughRiders News Release
FRISCO, TEXAS (JULY 7, 2014) - The Texas League named left-hander Edwar Cabrera its Pitcher of the Week for June 30-July 6. This is the third Texas League Pitcher of the Week award for Cabrera in his career and the third given to a RoughRiders hurler this season.
Cabrera receives the accolade for his performance against the Arkansas Travelers on Thursday, July 3 when he pitched eight shutout innings and won his fourth decision of the season. The 'Riders defeated the Travs 2-0 as Cabrera allowed three hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.
The 26-year-old starter did not allow an extra-base hit in the game. The Travelers did not place a runner into scoring position until the fifth inning against Cabrera, and it was an isolated occurrence. The last time the lefty pitched eight innings in a contest also came against Arkansas, but in 2012 when Cabrera was a member of the Colorado Rockies organization. The native of BanÃ-, Dominican Republic played for Frisco's Texas League rival, the Tulsa Drillers, in 2012.
Cabrera, 6-feet 195 pounds, owns a 4-6 record with a 3.07 ERA this season. Through 91 innings (14 starts and five relief appearances), Cabrera has surrendered 37 runs (31 earned) on 87 hits with 26 walks and 73 walks. Opponents hold a .251 average against him in 2014.
The southpaw is no stranger to the Texas League. An All-Star in 2012 and 2014, Cabrera twice earned Texas League Pitcher of the Week honors with the Drillers in 2012 (April 16-23 and June 11-18). The Rangers acquired Cabrera off waivers on October 16, 2013 after shoulder surgery claimed his entire 2013 season.
This is the third weekly award handed out to a RoughRiders player this season. Right-handed pitcher Luke Jackson, now with Triple-A Round Rock, won pitcher of the week honors for April 14-20. Fellow righty Jerad Eickhoff took home the designation for the week of April 28-May 5. Frisco won four such awards last season, including three Pitcher of the Week awards. Carlos Pimentel won twice in a three-week stretch and Neil Ramirez also won Texas League Pitcher of the Week honors in 2013.
The RoughRiders return to Dr Pepper Ballpark on Wednesday, July 9 to begin a four-game series with the Corpus Christi Hooks. For information on tickets to see the RoughRiders in 2014, please call (972) 731-9200, email info@ridersbaseball.com or visit www.ridersbaseball.com.
