
Kemp and Van Slyke Rehab with Isotopes

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielders Matt Kemp and Scott Van Slyke are scheduled to start their Major League rehabilitation assignments tonight, Saturday June 22 with the Albuquerque Isotopes as they open a four-game homestand with the Round Rock Express. First pitch for tonight's game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Isotopes Park. Outfielder Alex Castellanos and right-hander Chris Withrow rejoin the Isotopes today after being optioned by the Dodgers this past week following their June 11 recall. Righty Kyle Cofield also joins Albuquerque from Chattanooga. In corresponding moves, right-handers Matt Magill and Sean White were placed on the disabled list retroactive to June 20.
The Dodgers placed outfielder Kemp on the 15-day disabled list with a mild right hamstring strain on May 30. Kemp was batting .251 with two home runs and 17 RBI in 51 games this season. The Oklahoma native played four games on two rehab stints with the Isotopes last season, hitting .500 (8-for-16) with two doubles, two home runs, six runs scored and six RBI.
The two-time Gold Glove winner, All-Star and Silver Slugger was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the sixth round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft and holds a career .292 batting average (1010-for-3456) in eight Major League seasons, all with Los Angeles.
Van Slyke is back with Albuquerque to make a rehab appearance after being placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Dodgers with left shoulder bursitis on June 11. The 26-year-old opened the season with the Isotopes and was recalled to Los Angeles on May 10. He is hitting .221 (15-for-68) with six home runs and 11 RBI in 24 games with the Dodgers. Van Slyke played 31 games at first base for the Albuquerque this season but has played 18 games in the outfield for the Dodgers and just one at first base.
Right-handed pitchers Sean White and Matt Magill have been moved to the Disabled List today retroactive to June 20. Magill is 2-0 with a 2.81 ERA (10 ER/32.0 IP) in six starts with Albuquerque and White is 2-4 coupled with a 3.46 ERA (16 ER/41.2 IP) in 13 appearances, seven starts in 2013 with the Isotopes.
Castellanos made his Major League debut in 2012 with the Dodgers. He is coming off of his first big league stint this season with Los Angeles. The 26-year-old played in four games with the Dodgers during his latest stretch with the club hitting .222 (2-for-9) with a double and a run scored. With Albuquerque this season, Castellanos is batting .270 (43-for-159) with two triples, nine home runs and 28 RBI in 43 games.
Withrow is coming off of his first career trip to the Major Leagues making his debut on June 12 against Arizona. The 24-year-old appeared in three games amassing a 5.40 ERA (2 ER/3.1 IP) and striking out three batters. The Texas native boasts a 1.93 ERA (5 ER/23.1 IP) with Albuquerque this season. Withrow, who was selected by the Dodgers in the first round (20th overall) in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, has only allowed earned runs in two of his 22 appearances this year.
Cofield was originally drafted by Atlanta in the eighth round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft and signed with the Dodgers in February of 2013, his fourth organization. He has pitched in two Triple-A games out of the bullpen with the Charlotte Knights of the International League while with the White Sox organization in 2011. The 26-year-old Alabama native is 27-31 overall in the minors with a 4.03 ERA (252 ER/562.2 IP). This season with Chattanooga, he is 1-2 with a 2.78 (10 ER/32.1 IP) in 18 appearances (one start) with 29 strikeouts and 17 walks.
The Isotopes are currently one game behind the Round Rock Express for first place in the American Southern Division. The club opens up their four game-set with the Express tonight with righty Red Patterson (4-1, 4.29) going for Albuquerque against Round Rock's righty Jake Brigham (0-1, 7.18).
