Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds opened their homestand with a 6-2 victory over the division-rival Iowa Cubs in front of a season-high 13,637 fans on Saturday night at AutoZone Park.
The win cut Memphis' (37-40) deficit to one full game behind Iowa (38-39) in the PCL American Northern Division.
First baseman Brock Peterson blasted his 17th homer of the season in the win, moving the slugger past Kila Ka'aihue into first place for homers in the circuit. Jamie Romak added his 14th big fly to rank fourth in the league.
Scott McGregor (2-4) broke a string of four straight losses with a quality start win on the night. The right-hander allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings, his longest career Triple-A start.
Iowa jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Brian Bogusevic worked a one-out walk and scored on a Brad Nelson double.
Memphis knotted the game at 1-1 in the third and didn't look back. Catcher Rob Johnson smoked a double down the left field line, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and came home to score the tying run on a Ryan Jackson sacrifice fly to deep center.
Romak's long ball moved the Redbirds ahead at 3-1 in the fourth. With Jermaine Curtis on first, Romak blasted a two-bomb on the backside of the TruGreen Bluff in left field.
Bogusevic tripled and scored Iowa's second run in the sixth, tripling and scoring on a Dave Sappelt sacrifice fly.
Peterson later made noise in the sixth inning with a three-run blast just over the left field wall for a 6-2 Memphis lead.
Chris Rusin (6-7) was charged with the loss, surrendering six runs on seven hits in six innings. Former Redbird Eduardo Sanchez followed with two scoreless innings.
Sam Freeman pitched two scoreless in relief of McGregor, extending his scoreless stretch to a team-leading 17.1 consecutive innings over his last nine outings.
The division rivals continue their series at 6:05 pm CT on Sunday evening. Right-hander Carlos Martinez (1-1, 2.45) will start for Memphis. Iowa will counter with right-hander Nick Struck (4-4, 5.84).
