The Kelowna Rockets fell 3-2 to the Victoria Royals on Wednesday night at Prospera Place.
The Rockets held a 2-1 lead through 40 minutes of play, but the Royals were able to push ahead in the third period with two goals.
It took until the second period for either team to get on the board.
Victoria opened the scoring with a shot from Gary Haden (25) behind the net went off of a Rockets defenders skate and Roman Basran then into the net. Pavel Novak's feed from behind the net to Ethan Ernst (6) tied things up under three minutes later. Matthew Wedman (23) pushed the Rockets ahead with a one-timer from the slot.
Tarun Fizer (19) tied up the game once again just 22 seconds into the third period. The Royals leading scorer, Brayden Tracey (22), restored their lead just after the midway point of the period.
Jacob Herauf was given a game misconduct and a five-minute major for kneeing after he delivered a hit on Trevor Wong in the neutral zone with 3:44 to play in the game. The power play became a five on three after Will Warm was called for high sticking with 1:28 to go. The Rockets pulled Roman Basran for an extra attacker but were unable to capitalize on the six on three.
In addition to Wong, Kyle Topping also left the game after receiving a hit. Head coach Kris Mallette did not have an update on the pair after the game.
Roman Basran stopped 30 of 33 shots he faced. The Royals outshot the Rockets 33-24.
Kelowna was 0-for-4 on the power play. The Rockets only surrendered one penalty all night, killing it off.
Sean Comrie (ubi), Michael Farren (ubi), Jake Lee, Liam Kindree (ubi), Dylan Wightman and Nolan Foote (lbi) were the Rockets scratches.
The Rockets will be back in action on Friday when they head to Kamloops to take on the Blazers. The home-and-home series will shift back to Kelowna on Saturday night; tickets are on sale at selectyourtickets.com, at the Prospera Place box office or by phone at 250-762-5050.
