Published on March 12, 2020 under Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Earlier today, after a meeting among the CHL Executive Council and respective regional Board of Governors as well as consulting medical experts, the Western Hockey League (WHL) has made the decision to pause the 2019-20 season, effective immediately.
As a result, the Edmonton Oil Kings will not be playing games until the WHL determines its next steps addressing the coronavirus pandemic. The Oil Kings will be communicating to ticket holders, partners and other affected parties information as soon it becomes available.
We will continue to follow protocols as laid out by the WHL and Canadian Hockey League, and will continue to work in close consultation with health and government officials.
We will provide additional information as we learn more on this evolving issue. Please continue to check www.RogersPlace.com/news or www.OilKings.ca for more information.
The health and safety of our players, fans and employees is our top priority. We thank our fans for their support and understanding as we work through this unprecedented period.
"Oilers Entertainment Group supports the decision of the Western Hockey League to pause play for the 2019-20 season until further notice," said Edmonton Oil Kings Chairman, Bob Nicholson. "We are eager to have both the Edmonton Oil Kings and Edmonton Oilers return to the ice, but our main priority needs to be doing our part to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
"We encourage our fans, players and staff to remain diligent and safe during these uncharted times."
