Kay Hits for Cycle in Renegades 16-4 Victory

Wappingers Falls, NY (7/14/2014)- The Hudson Valley Renegades improved to 23-8 overall on Monday afternoon, after a 16-4 victory over the Batavia Muckdogs. The Renegades scored their runs on 24 hits, as they topped their previous season high of 19 against Batavia on July 12. Their 16 runs were two more than their previous mark of 14 against the Staten Island Yankees on June 26. Hudson Valley has now outscored their opponents in 2014 by a total of 148-98, the largest difference of any team in the New York-Penn League. They had five players with multiple hits on Monday, and ten with at least one hit.

The real story of the afternoon started with the first swing of Grant Kay's professional career. The Louisville product homered to left-field, on the first swing of his first at-bat, to drive in three runs. In his third plate appearance, he doubled and came around to score in the bottom of the fourth inning. He followed that up with two more singles in the fifth and seventh, before capping off his day with a triple down the right-field line. The last NYPL player to complete the cycle was State College's Jimmy Bosco in 2013. He joins Hunter Lockwood as the only other player on the team to record five hits in a game.

After seven runs in the first inning, Hudson Valley matched their season high in runs after putting up seven against the Muckdogs in the 4 th inning on Friday night. Casey Gillaspie and Bralin Jackson each had four hits in the contest, as Jace Conrad and Coty Blanchard both chipped in with three. The Renegades had hits in more than fifty percent of their at-bats, going 24-47 as a team at the plate.

On the mound, Enderson Franco earned the win after throwing five innings with two earned runs, two strikeouts and no walks. He improves to 2-1 this season after six starts. Hudson Valley used a trio of relievers to follow up Franco, as Ely Echarry, Gerardo Reyes and Brian Miller went a combined four innings with just one run against them and not a single walk.

Notes: Grant Kay is the first player to hit for the cycle in the New York-Penn League this season. Hudson Valley is the first team to reach 23 wins this season, as they expand their first place lead in the McNamara division by seven games. Their 15 wins at Dutchess Stadium are the highest total in the NYPL, with State College having the next highest with 11 home victories.

The Renegades take the road for their next six games before returning home to take on the Staten Island Yankees on July 22. First pitch is 7:05 pm AT Dutchess Stadium.
