Lowell Spinners News Release

The Spinners look to snap a six-game losing skid in the final game of the six-game homestand.

S P I N - N O T E S:

Heartbreaking Defeat: The Spinners were three times just one strike away from a Futures at Fenway win, but the Mahoning Valley Scrappers would not be denied, tying the game on a bases loaded walk and then exploding for five additional runs to earn a come-from-behind 6-1 win...The loss was the Spinners third straight Futures at Fenway loss (2010, 2012, 2014) after three straight wins at Fenway to start the special game.

Pitcher Confusion : After RHP Chandler Shepherd walked in the tying run, MGR Joe Oliver went to the bullpen for closer Carlos Pinales...Unfortunately, after Pinales had completed his warm-up pitches, home plate umpire Mac Dietz notified Oliver that Pinales was not on the game ' s line-up card and thus ineligible to pitch ... RHP Oscar Perez came in out of the bullpen cold, hitting the first batter he faced, eventually allowing the three inherited runners to score plus two of his own as part of the Scrappers six run inning.

McAvoy Impresses : RHP Kevin McAvoy was impressive in his two innings of work, getting the start Sunday afternoon...McAvoy needed just 18 pitches to navigate two scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out two...A fourth round selection out of Bryant, McAvoy has now thrown four scoreless innings to start his career.

Streak Snapped: OF Nick Longhi had his 14-game hitting streak come to an end Sunday afternoon, though he still managed to have an impact in the game...Longhi walked and reached on an error, scoring the lone Spinners run when he dislodged the ball from the catcher sliding into home plate...Longhi also made a pair of strong plays in left field, playing two balls cleaning off the Green Monster, holding batters to singles on each play.

Two Nabbed at Plate: It appeared fate was on the Spinners side throughout the game on Sunday as two Mahoning Valley Scrappers were thrown out at the plate...In the fifth inning, OF Shane Victorino threw out 1B Leo Castillo at home on a perfect one-hop throw to the plate and in the eighth inning 1B Sam Travis got 3B Ordomar Valdez at home plate with the infield playing in, keeping the Scrappers scoreless through eight.

I GOT IT, I GOT IT: In addition to the two runners caught at home plate, SS Mauricio Dubon used a little gamesmanship to keep a potential Mahoning Valley run off the scoreboard...In the eighth inning with a runner on first and one out, OF Greg Allen looped a ball down the rightfield line...The placement would have given Valdez a chance to score from first, but a quick thinking Dubon from his shortstop position yelled "I Got It, I Got It," causing Valdez to pause at second before eventually going to third eliminating his chance to score.

4-6-3 : Through the game ' s first five innings the trio of 2B Raymel Flores, SS Mauricio Dubon and 1B Sam Travis combined for three 4-6-3 double plays...Twice the middle infield combination of Flores and Dubon made quick turns to complete the double plays, helping keep the Scrappers off the scoreboard.

Victorino Ready : OF Shane Victorino made his fourth and likely final rehab appearance with the Spinners at Fenway Sunday afternoon, going 0-for-2 with a walk, going first to third on a single to shallow centerfield, and the outfield assist to cut a runner down at the plate...Victorino left in the fifth inning as he had a flight home to catch to spend time with his family over the Major League All-Star Break.
