Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - A day after a heart breaking loss at Fenway Park, the Spinners rebounded with a big win, topping the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on the back of two Nick Moore home runs, 8-5, Monday night at LeLacheur Park.
The win snapped the Spinners six game losing streak and allowed the team to salvage a win on the home stand.
Lowell (13-18) would jump out to an early 4-0 lead scoring in each of the first three innings of the game. The Spinners got on the board in the first after Danny Mars led off with an infield single, stole second and advanced to third on the throw by catcher Martin Cervenka. A one-out single by Sam Travis plated Mars to give the Spinners a lead.
Lowell would add a run in the second on an RBI forceout by David Sopilka, before adding two runs in the third inning. In the third, it was Moore's first home run of the night, a solo shot that just missed going through the Jay Gee's Ice Cream Cone in left-centerfield, and an RBI single by Mauricio Dubon, putting the Spinners up, 4-0.
Mahoning Valley would pull even in the sixth, scoring four runs against the duo of Edwar Garcia and Ellis Jimenez. After Garica found himself in a jam, Joe Oliver went to Jimenez, but D'vone McClure took the first pitch he saw through the hole at short, plating a pair and evening the score at four.
The Spinners took the lead for good however in the seventh inning against relieve Anthony Vizcaya. A one-out bunt single by Raymel Flores and an infield single by Travis set the stage for Moore who hit the first pitch he saw over the right field wall and Aiken Street to give the Spinners a 7-4 lead.
The Scrappers and Spinners would trade runs in the eighth, with the Spinners scoring on a Mars RBI single, before Carlos Pinales came on in the ninth for his league leading eighth save of the season.
Ty Buttrey started for the Spinners and was fantastic, throwing four hitless innings, striking out four while walking a pair. After a clean fifth, Garcia got into trouble in the sixth and ended up being charged with four runs on three hits and a walk, striking out three. Jimenez (2-1, 6.50) was charged with the blown save, but also earned the win, allowing the two inherited runners to score plus a run of his own on three hits, striking out one over 2.1 innings. Pinales locked down the win with a perfect ninth, striking out two.
Each and every Spinner picked up at least one hit, as the team collected a season-high 17 hits, led by Deiner Lopez and Mars, who each had thre hit nights. Moore was the star of the game, going 2-for-5 in his first professional game in the outfield, with his second and third home runs of the season, while Flores, Travis and Dubon also had two-hit games.
The Spinners are off Tuesday as they spend the day traveling to Batavia for a six-game swing through upstate New York, ending in Auburn before kicking off a nine-game homestand July 22 right here at LeLacheur.
