Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD: Friday night was a tough one for the Delmarva Shorebirds (4-3) as the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (3-3) defeated them by a score of 14-4.
Kannapolis got on the board right away with a two-run single by Troy Claunch in the opening inning followed by a Bryce Willits run-scoring hit to make it 3-0 Cannon Balers after one.
Two more runs scored for the visitors in the next inning on a solo home run by Logan Glass and an RBI single by Tim Elko.
The Shorebirds got on the board in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Maxwell Costes as Trendon Craig scored, which made it a 5-1 game.
The deficit would grow, however, for Delmarva as the Cannon Ballers struck for two more runs in the fourth on another RBI by Elko and a groundout by Layant Tapia that pushed the lead to 7-1.
Three more scored in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly by Drake Logan scoring Bryce Willits and a two-run single by Elko as his fourth hit of the night made it 10-1 Kannapolis.
After a run-scoring by Logan Glass in the top of the sixth, Delmarva grabbed their second run of the game in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly by Trendon Craig to shrink the deficit to nine at 11-2.
It would stay 11-2 into the ninth inning as Kannapolis then scored three more runs to raise the lead to 14-2. The Shorebirds would get two of those back in the final half inning on a two-run double by Randy Florentino, but the Cannon Ballers closed it out from there to win the game 14-4.
Each starter factored into the decision as Drew McDaniel (2-0) earned the win for Kannapolis with Alfred Vega (0-1) taking the loss for the Shorebirds.
Despite the tough defeat, Delmarva did get a notable offensive performance from Trendon Craig who matched his career high with three hits while also registering a run, a stolen base, and an RBI. Randy Florentino produced in his first start of the season by collecting three hits with two RBIs coming home on his double in the ninth.
Delmarva will look to regain the edge in the series on Saturday night with Juan De Los Santos taking the mound to face Tyler Schweitzer for the Cannon Ballers. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
