Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Kannapolis Intimidators overcame an early deficit with an avalanche of offense to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds, 14-6, on Saturday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. Kannapolis (24-17) jumped Hickory (24-18) for first place in the South Atlantic League Northern Division second half standings.
Kannapolis scored 13 straight runs, crossing the plate in every inning from the second inning through the seventh, including a four-run fifth and a five-run seventh. Trayce Thompson and Leighton Pangilinan each went 3-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. The Intimidators bullpen worked six innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit.
Trailing 5-1 going into the bottom of the second inning, the Intimidators took advantage of a throwing error from Shorebirds second baseman Michael Rooney, allowing Keenyn Walker to score. Rangel Ravelo added an RBI ground out, pulling Kannapolis within two runs.
Miguel Gonzalez led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a home run (2) to left-center field on the first pitch from David Baker, pulling Kannapolis within a run, 5-4.
The Intimidators chased Bakers from the game in the bottom of the fifth inning after facing three batters. Dan Black led off the inning with a ground rule double to center field, and Thompson doubled him home to tie the game, 5-5. Two batters later, Pangilinan came through with a two-run double to give the Intimidators their first lead of the game. Pangilinan later scored on Dusty Harvard's sacrifice fly, giving Kannapolis an 8-5 lead after five innings.
Nick McCully (4-2) preserved the lead over his 3 and 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. Wes Whisler allowed an unearned run in 1 and 1/3 innings, and Chase Cooney tossed a scoreless ninth inning.
Thompson added an RBI ground out in the sixth inning before the Intimidators exploded again for five more runs in the seventh. Pangilinan led off the inning with a home run (1) to center field, the 19th home run by an Intimidator to lead off an inning this season. Harvard singled and scored on a passed ball for an 11-5 lead. Black busted his second double of the game, driving in two runs, and Thompson singled home Black for the Intimidators 14th run, the team's most since a 16-4 win over Rome on June 5.
Baker (2-2) took the loss for the Shorebirds, allowing seven runs (four earned) on seven hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in four innings on the mound. The Shorebirds bullpen of D.J. Ferguson and Travis Strong combined to allow seven more runs (six earned) on eight hits in four relief innings.
Kannapolis starter Brad Furnish, making his first start since joining the team from Winston-Salem, allowed five runs (four earned) over three innings.
