Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Kannapolis, N.C. - The Kannapolis Intimidators scored 13 unanswered runs between the third and seventh innings to defeat the Shorebirds 14-6 in game two of the series. The 14 runs are the most the Shorebirds have surrendered since June 3 when they gave up a season high 18 runs against Hickory.
The Shorebirds sprinted to an early lead. After the teams traded runs in the second inning, Delmarva exploded for four runs on five hits in the third. Mikey Planeta and Riley Hornback hit back-to-back singles. After an error by the catcher put runners at second and third, Michael Rooney lashed a double down the left field line to give the Shorebirds a 3-1 lead. Two batters later, Jeremy Nowak belted his third homer of the season over the left field wall to lift the Shorebirds in front 5-1.
The Shorebirds did not score over the next four innings while Kannapolis proceeded to score 13 unanswered runs.
In the third, Kannapolis got two runs back in part due to a throwing error on Rooney, which brought home Keenyn Walker. In the fourth inning, Miguel Gonzalez hit a solo homer to pull the Intimidators within a run.
In the fifth, Kannapolis plated four runs to take an 8-5 lead. Dan Black and Trayce Thompson hit back-to-back doubles to tie the game at 5-5. Later in the inning, Leighton Pangilinan hit a two-run double to vault Kannapolis to a 7-5 lead. Dusty Harvard hit a sacrifice fly to center to increase the lead to 8-5.
Shorebirds starter David Baker came out for the fifth inning, but did not record an out in the fifth. Baker allowed seven hits and four earned runs. He struck out seven and walked three batters.
Kannapolis added another run in the sixth and five more in the seventh inning. Pangilinan led off the seventh with a home run off D.J. Ferguson. Later in the inning, Black hit a two-run double.
Ferguson allowed five hits and four earned runs over 2.1 innings while Travis Strong gave up three hits and two runs over 1.2 innings.
The Shorebirds tacked on a run in the eighth inning. Nowak, who reached three times, walked to open the inning. He later scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Garabez Rosa.
The Shorebirds and Intimidators play game three of the series on Sunday night at 5:05 p.m. LHP Jarret Martin is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
