Kane Becomes 219th ECHL Player In NHL

PRINCETON, N.J. – Former Charlotte left wing Boyd Kane is the 219th former ECHL player to advance to the National Hockey League. Kane, who made his debut with Philadelphia on October 16 at San Jose, has seven penalty minutes and three shots in three games with the Flyers.

Signed as a free agent by Philadelphia in June, Kane scored 11 points (5g-6a) in 12 games with Charlotte in his first professional season in 1998-99. He also played in the American Hockey League with Hartford in 1998-99 scoring eight points (3g-5a) in 56 games. Kane returned to the Checkers in 1999-2000 and scored 29 points (10g-19a) in 47 games. His final stint with the Checkers came in 2000-01 when he scored 17 points (9g-8a) in 12 games.

Kane was originally selected by Pittsburgh in the third round (72nd overall) in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft and later chosen by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (114th overall) in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

Kane is the fourth ECHL player to make his NHL debut in 2003-04, joining Michael Ryder, who played for Montreal on October 9; Garrett Burnett, who played for Anaheim on October 8; and Andrew Hutchinson, who played for Nashville on October 18.

There were 90 ECHL players that played in the NHL in 2002-03, including 20 that made their first-ever appearance. The 20 players who made their NHL debut in 2002-03 were: Francois Beauchemin (Montreal), Zdenek Blatny (Atlanta), Joe Corvo (Los Angeles), Fedor Fedorov (Vancouver), Vern Fiddler (Nashville), Brian Finley (Nashville), Simon Gamache (Atlanta), Ryan Kraft (San Jose), Kent McDonell (Columbus), Brett McLean (Chicago), Rick Mrozik (Calgary), Cody Rudkowsky (St. Louis), Curtis Sanford (St. Louis), Cam Severson (Anaheim), Mike Siklenka (Philadelphia), Chris Schmidt (Los Angeles), Jerred Smithson (Los Angeles), Tim Thomas (Boston), John Tripp (New York Rangers) and Matt Walker (St. Louis).
