IHL 2 Kalamazoo Wings

Kalamazoo Wings Week in Review

February 26, 2007 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

Kalamazoo commenced the week on Wednesday (2/21) versus the Rockford IceHogs during the first of two Education Day Games presented by American Village Builders and Culver's. Jason Lawmaster (7) jolted the 4,584 in attendance, consisting mainly of elementary school kids from 18 southwest Michigan schools, onto their feet with a wrist shot from the left circle 2:44 into the game. Rockford answered back to tie the game at 1-1 midway through the period, when Bryce Cockburn (7) knocked in a rebound from the slot. The tally snapped a 214:00 minute scoreless streak by K-Wing opponents, a UHL record. The IceHogs jumped ahead 2-1 in the second period, when Jason Notterman (9) finished off an odd man rush by tipping the puck past an outreached Ryan Nie. After Nathan Lutz (7) gave Rockford a 3-1 lead just 56 seconds into the third period, Kalamazoo stormed back with a power-play goal from Nick Bootland, which tied the K-Wings' captain with Kory Karlander for the team lead in goals scored with 31. Rockford put the contest out of reach late in the period, with two empty-net goals from Kevin Ulanski (19,20) giving the IceHogs a 5-2 victory over the K-Wings.

Remaining at Wings Stadium, Kalamazoo concluded their two-game homestand on Friday (2/23) against the Quad City Mallards. Kalamazoo jumped out to a 1-0 lead, when Bootland performed a move normally only seen during the NBA All-Star Weekend. The K-Wings' captain deliberately sent the puck off the end wall to himself and beat Jason Tapp, extending his point streak to six games, as well as giving the veteran the team lead in goals scored with 32. Adam Elzinga's puck awareness helped the K-Wings extend their lead later in the opening period. Elzinga stripped the puck away from Justin Chwedoruk and flung it into the high slot to Justin Cross, who buried a slap shot, giving him a UHL rookie best 22nd goal. Quad City closed out the scoring in the opening period with a power-play goal from Sergei Durdin (7). Joe Markusen (4) regained a two-goal lead for the K-Wings scoring from the high slot 6:22 into the second period. Making his first appearance in seven games, goaltender Tom Askey set aside 32 shots, including 11 in a scoreless third period to earn a 3-1 victory over the Mallards.

Kalamazoo concluded the week on Saturday (2/24) with their first-ever visit to Bloomington, Illinois to battle the PrairieThunder. In the first period, Jesse Rycroft found Glenn Detulleo (11) in the slot, who one-timed the puck past former K-Wing Jeff Reynaert to give the K-Wings a 1-0 lead. With just over a minute remaining in the opening period, Ryan Gillis registered his fifth goal of the season on a slap shot from between the circles to square the contest at 1-1. Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn (8) regained the lead for Kalamazoo, tickling the twine with a blast from the right circle, 4:25 into the second. Bloomington knotted the game at 2-2, 1:45 into the third period, when B.J. Gaustad (7) flipped in a backhanded shot from the slot. Joe Markusen (5) propelled the K-Wings ahead 3-2 with a blue line wrist shot midway into the period. Thunder forward Jon Booras (11) answered back a few minutes later from the left circle. The game eventually headed into a shootout, where the K-Wings would prevail with a lone goal from Detulleo giving Kalamazoo the 4-3 shootout victory.
