Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers saw one lead evaporate early Tuesday, and another may not be far behind.
Newark launched four homers to rally from an early 5-0 deficit, knocking off the Barnstormers, 10-8, in a day game at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the loss, Lancaster falls below .500 for the first time in the second half and could slip into second place, a percentage point behind Somerset should the Patriots trip up Long Island Tuesday evening.
Lancaster still held an 8-6 lead with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Charlie Weatherby, in his second inning of work, walked Brian Barton. Carl Everett rode the first pitch he saw out of the ballpark down the right field line. First base umpire Manolo Alejandro originally signaled a foul ball, but after first base coach James Cooper was ejected for arguing the call, the umpires huddled, and the call was overruled. Everett's homer tied the game. Eric Munson followed with a single smashed into center field. Isaiah Kaaihue came through with his second two-run homer of the day, a blast to left for the 10-8. Armando Benitez held tight in the ninth for his eighth save.
The Barnstormers got to Mike Loree for a quick five runs in the first inning. Lloyd Turner yanked a leadoff double off the left field wall and scored when Adam Witter rolled a double inside the first base bag. Bryant Nelson advanced Witter with a ground ball on the right side. Aaron Herr's smash on the left side skipped past Randy Gress for an error as the second run scored. Reggie Taylor grounded a single up the middle to add another baserunner. Ryan Mulhern cranked a three-run homer to left center for a 5-0 lead.
Barton led off the second with a line drive homer to right. Singles by Everett and Munson along with a pair of ground balls produced a second run.
Newark narrowed the gap again in the fourth on the first two-run homer by Kaaihue, a blast to left center off Jason Simontacchi, offsetting an RBI single by Michael Woods in the third.
In the sixth, the clubs exchanged two-run innings. Woods led off with a triple against starter Mike Loree, and Martinez snuck a double down the right field line for a 7-4 lead. Martinez took third on Barton's throwing error, then raced home on a short sacrifice fly by Joe Gaetti.
Ross Peeples gave up a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Daryle Ward reached when his ground ball crept under Turner's glove for an error. Barton doubled to the alley in left center. Both runners crossed the plate when Everett laced a single into right center.
Wayne Franklin will take the hill on Wednesday evening at 6:35. Former Barnstormer Shane Youman (1-1) will counter for Newark.
NOTES: Martinez has hit safely in 10 straight (13-for-41, .317)...Herr has hit in seven in a row (14-for-29, .483)...Mulhern's homer stretched a streak to six games...Mulhern was ejected for arguing about a third strike call that ended the top of the fifth...Woods had three hits for the third time this season...Simontacchi has allowed 12 homers this season, seven to the Bears...The Barnstormers have dropped eight of their last 10 decisions.
