Kaaihue Means Home Run

(Newark, N.J, Aug. 17, 2010) - Isaiah Kaaihue blasted his second two-run homer of the game to cap a four-run eighth inning rally as the Newark Bears completed a 10-8 come-from-behind victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers Tuesday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The Bears entered the eighth inning, trailing 8-6, but made the dramatic comeback in the frame with one out against Charlie Weatherby (1-3). Brian Barton, who had three hits and scored four runs, walked followed by a Carl Everett fly ball down the right field line that was first ruled foul, but was overturned into a two-run homer tying the game at 8. It was Everett's tenth homer of the season and his fourth RBI on the afternoon. With still no out, Eric Munson singled to center to set up Kaaihue's game-winning blast, his third of the season. Kaaihue entered the game with only one homer and five RBI.
The Barnstormers jumped all over Bears starter Mike Loree in the first inning. Lloyd Turner led off with a double and came home to score on the RBI double by Adam Witter. Witter scored on an error where Aaron Herr was credited with an RBI followed two batters later by a Ryan Mulhern three-run homer to deep left to push Lancaster's lead five runs.
Newark sliced the lead to 5-2, scoring twice off Jason Simontacchi in the home second inning. Barton belted a long solo homer to right field, his 12th of the season, for the Bears' first run and Randy Gress drove home Everett with a RBI fielder's choice after Everett had singled. Lancaster came back and increased their lead in the top of the third. Herr doubled and scored on a single from Michael Woods, his second of three hits on the day, and it was 6-2.
With Barton aboard in the fourth, Kaaihue deposited his first home run off the game off the screen in left centerfield to pull the Bears within two runs. Lancaster added a pair in the sixth inning to extend the lead back to four runs and ending Loree's day. Everett set up the Bears' late rally with a two-run single in the sixth that plated Daryle Ward and Barton.
Michael Nix (2-2), who pitched a perfect eighth inning, got the win in relief. Armando Benitez closed the door in the ninth, allowing just one single to record his eighth save of the season. Loree took a no-decision, tossing five innings, allowing eight runs, six earned, on 10 hits, with seven strikeouts.
The Bears and 'Stormers continue the three-game set on Wednesday evening. Game time is set for 6:35 p.m., with the gates of Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium opening at 5:35 p.m. Wednesday night is "Kids Eat Free," presented by Dr. Thomas Haveron. All kids 12 and under (with a paid adult) get to eat free at all concession stands throughout the ballpark.
