Game Rewind

Tuesday, November 18th @ Port Huron (Kalamazoo 5 - Port Huron 3)

Port Huron, MI - In a battle of the two hottest teams in the International Hockey League, it was the Kalamazoo Wings that left McMorran Place Arena still sizzling with a 5-3 victory over the Port Huron Icehawks.

Over the course of the past week, the K-Wings have been getting off to quick starts. Tuesday night was no different. Glenn Detulleo (6th) deked around two defenders and slid a backhander past goaltender Larry Sterling 1:11 into the first period giving Kalamazoo a 1-0 lead.

The goal for Detulleo extends his point streak to three games and gives the captain a point in seven of his last eight contests.

Crashing the net midway into the period, Tommy Lange (3rd) added to the K-Wings lead by punching in a rebound off a Rod Aldoff blue-line slap shot that was set up from a behind the net pass by Tyler Willis.

With just under five minutes remaining the opening period, the reigning IHL Pepsi Player of the Week, Jamie Carroll, continued his scoring tear by collecting an assist to extend his point and assist streak to six games on a Nick Lindberg second chance goal to cut the K-Wings lead to 2-1. Also assisting on the goal was Jeff Zehr, who has now earned a point in five straight games.

Starting quick in a period isn't limited to the first period for Kalamazoo; Willis sent a saucer pass to Lange, who sent a rocket past Sterling 1:33 into the second period.

With a pair of assists, Willis now has four points (2 goals and 2 assists) in three games this season since returning to Kalamazoo.

Capitalizing on the power-play, Detulleo flipped a backhanded pass between the circles to Casey Handrahan (1st). Handrahan eluded a sliding Jason Chafe and placed a slap shot over the glove hand of Sterling at the 7:38 mark of the second.

The Icehawks cashed in on a man-advantage opportunity ten minutes later, when Jeremy Tucker (5th) poked in a loose puck to the right of Jason Tapp. Earning his second point of the night was Zehr, who reached the 300 point-plateau for his career with the assist.

Inching closer in the third period, Lindberg (6th) snuck in front of the K-Wings crease and deflected a Zehr pass from behind the net, which brought the Icehawks within a single goal.

However, not to be denied, Lucas Drake (7th) sealed the victory for Kalamazoo tickling the twine with his team-leading seventh goal of the season on an empty-netter.

Fresh off being named Southern Sports Supply Goaltender of the Week, Tapp stopped a K-Wings season-high 34 shots to earn his 5th victory.

Friday, November 21st Vs Bloomington (Kalamazoo 5- Bloomington 0)

Kalamazoo, MI - The reigning Southern Sports Supply Goaltender of the Week didn't look like he wanted to relinquish the honor anytime soon, as Jason Tapp turned aside a season-high 45 saves to guide the Kalamazoo Wings to a 5-0 victory over the Bloomington PrairieThunder at Wings Stadium.

In the first period, if the net was a crime scene, Tapp would have been arrested for robbery. Despite allowing a season-high 23 shots on net and shooting a season-low three shots on net, it was the K-Wings that led the PrairieThunder 2-0 after 20 minutes.

John Miller (1st) put the K-Wings on the board at the 6:02 mark of the first period with his first goal of the season. Miller took a pass from Rob Jarvis and skated into the PrairieThunder zone, blasting a slap shot from just outside the right circle that fooled PrairieThunder goalie Scott Fankhouser.

Over one-minute later, on just their second shot of the period, the K-Wings scored their second goal of the night on a Glenn Detulleo (7th) shot that skirted past the right pad of Fankhouser. With the goal, Detulleo has earned a point in four straight games as well as in 11 of his last 12 contests.

Lucas Drake (8th) added the K-Wings third goal of the night at 1:08. The goal extended Drake's current point streak to four games.

Jarvis (2nd) and Tommy Lange (5th) closed out the scoring for Kalamazoo by each lighting the lamp in the third period.

Besides stellar goaltending by Kalamazoo, the top penalty killing team in the IHL flexed their muscles denying all 10 of Bloomington's power-play chances.

Saturday, November 22nd @ Fort Wayne (Kalamazoo 3- Fort Wayne 2-Overtime)

Fort Wayne, IN - Maybe Yogi Berra was right, "it isn't over till it's over." The Kalamazoo Wings erased a two-goal deficit with less than two minutes remaining in regulation and then scored early in overtime to defeat the Fort Wayne Komets 3-2.

A night after being held scoreless at home, Fort Wayne registered the game's first goal 11:33 into the period with a power-play goal from Mathieu Curadeau. Besides being Curadeau's league-leading 5th power-play goal of the season, it also snapped a streak of 0 for 19 from the Komets against the K-Wings with man-advantage opportunities.

Curadeau's tally also gives him a league-lead in overall goals scored with twelve.

Despite plenty of chances, neither team was able to crack into the scoring column in the second stanza. The Komets out shot the K-Wings 14-12 in the period; however, the real opportunities came on the power-play. Kalamazoo went 0 for 5 on the power-play in the period, while Fort Wayne was 0 for 4.

On the power-play, David Hukalo (4th) deflected a Guy Dupuis shot from the point midway through the third period to extend the Komets leads to 2-0

.

Late penalties from Brad MacMillen and a double minor from Kevin Bertram left the door open for the K-Wings late in regulation.

Capitalizing on a 5-on-3 man-advantage, Mark Nebus (4th) tipped a Rod Aldoff shot with 1:45 remaining in the game to bring the K-Wings to within a single-goal.

With just under 10 seconds remaining in the period, Tyler Willis (3rd) extended his point streak to four games in heroic fashion, lifting a wrister over Nick Boucher to tie to game at 2-2.

Completing the trifecta of last minute power-play goals, Willis found Lucas Drake, who one-timed his team leading 9th lamp lighter of the season 1:44 into overtime to secure the 3-2 win for Kalamazoo.

The win marks the second time this season the K-Wings have clawed out of a third period deficit, with both decisions coming with an overtime goal (October 30th against Flint).

By earning points in tonight's game, Drake and Glenn Detulleo (2 assists) extend their point streaks to five games.

Sunday, November 23rd Vs Port Huron (Kalamazoo 6- Port Huron 1)

Kalamazoo, MI - Off on the road for the next three weeks, the Kalamazoo Wings wanted Sunday's performance to be memorable, and it was. Forward Mark Nebus, who in his 92-game professional career netted a total of six goals prior to Sunday, nearly matched it by scoring five times to lead the K-Wings to a 6-1 victory over the Port Huron Icehawks.

Finding a loose rebound in front, Rick Cleaver recorded his first goal of his pro career just 1:10 into the game to give the K-Wings the early advantage. Assisting on the goal was Tommy Lange and Casey Handrahan.

Lange finished the night with four points (4 assists). Handrahan added three points all on assists, including his 100th career assist, which occurred on the Cleaver tally.

Just 36 seconds later, Nebus (5th) wrapped-around a misplayed puck to the left of goaltender Kevin Defossess to extend the K-Wings lead to two goals. The goal, which proved to be the game-winner, ties Nebus with Glenn Detulleo for the team-lead in that category and also establishes a season best for shortest time between goals.

Using a power-play to creep back into the game, Nick Lindberg (7th) pulled the Icehawks to within a single-goal.

But the night belonged to Nebus who answered later in the period by streaking up the middle to receive a drop pass from Cleaver to capitalize on his second goal of the night.

Making up for a scoreless second period, Kalamazoo put the game out of reach 1:06 into the third with another tally from Nebus (7th). The hat trick by Nebus was the first in his career and the third this season for the K-Wings.

Midway through the period, the K-Wings cashed in on the power-play. Cleaver, part of his four point night, centered a pass to Nebus who ripped it over the glove hand of Defossess to push the K-Wings lead to 5-1.

Etching his name into K-Wings lore, Nebus, (8th) skating left to right between the circles, recorded his historic fifth-goal of the contest with a wrister from the slot.

Nebus tied a 25-year standing franchise record for most goals in a regular season game, which is now shared with Jim McRae (11/16/83 vs. Fort Wayne) and Tom Ross (11/21/79 vs. Fort Wayne).

The native of South Lyons, Michigan has now recorded at least one point in his last three games (6 goals, 2 assists).

Not to be overshadowed, making his home debut for this season, Joel Martin turned aside 30 shots to earn his first win of the season (1-1-0-0).

The victory now gives the K-Wings a season and league-best six-game winning streak, as well as extends their home winning streak to four.
