K-Wings Week in Review
November 6, 2006 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo embarked on four-game homestand Friday (11/3) night against the Port Huron Flags. Kory Karlander (3) sparked the K-Wings scoring assault with a power-play goal 10:49 into the opening period. The goal, which was Karlander's 20th man advantage tally in his K-Wings career, moves the veteran forward into second place on the franchise's UHL all-time power-play scoring list. Kalamazoo broke the game open in the second period with two-goals 52 seconds apart from one another. Captain Nick Bootland positioned himself in front of the crease and deflected a Casey Handrahan shot from the left point past Dustin Traylen to extend Kalamazoo's lead to 2-0. Moments later, a Flags turnover converted into good fortune for the K-Wings, when Adam Elzinga capitalized with his second goal of the season. Rookie sensation, Justin Cross continued his scoring brilliance by netting his third goal of the year to propel the K-Wings to a 4-0 victory over the Flags. Goaltender Tom Askey pushed aside 28 shots to record his league leading second shutout.
Riding a two-game winning streak, Kalamazoo came into Saturday's (11/4) contest versus the Flint Generals looking to tie their season high for consecutive victories. However, from the opening face-off, Flint controlled the action scoring the game's first six goals. Kalamazoo attempted a comeback midway through the second period, when David Herring roofed his second goal of the year to put the K-Wings on the scoreboard. Less than two minutes later, Tyler Willis finished off a textbook two-on-one by finding Karlander open near the left circle for his fourth goal of the young season. Momentum continued to build for Kalamazoo in the third period. Joe Markusen (1) rifled a shot past Flint's Jason Muzzatti to pull to K-Wings within three goals at 6-3. With four minutes remaining in regulation, forward Justin Cross poked the puck loose from Flint's Bobby Reynolds and lifted a back hand past Muzzatti to make the score 6-4. Unfortunately, the comeback bid would end there, as recently acquired General forward Mike Zbriger (6) scored the game's last goal to give Flint a 7-4 victory over Kalamazoo.
Fast Forward
Kalamazoo hits the ice three times this week, starting this Friday (11/10) at 7:30 p.m. versus arch-rival, the Fort Wayne Komets. Fort Wayne enters Wings Stadium atop of the Western Conference with a record of 7-1-0. Friday night also coincides with the K-Wings annual Word of Life Night.
On Saturday (11/11) for the first-time ever, the K-Wings will lace up their skates against the Chicago Hounds at 7:30 p.m. Chicago starts the week with a record of 2-4-0; both of the Hounds victories have come away from the Sears Center. Saturday night will be U.S. Army and Win-Win Night; if the K-Wings defeat the Hounds, everyone in attendance will receive a FREE ticket to the November 15th contest against Muskegon.
After playing four straight at Wings Stadium, the K-Wings will hit the road for a Sunday (11/12) affair in Moline, Illinois against the Quad City Mallards. With a record of 1-5-1, Quad City currently sits in fifth place in the Western Conference. Face-off from The Mark of the Quad Cities is set for 3:00 p.m. (CST).
Kris Cross
Just like the rap group of the 90's Kris Cross, K-Wings forward Justin Cross has fans ready to "jump, jump." Cross, who has scored four-goals this season, enters the week riding a K-Wings season high three-game goal streak.
How the West is Won
For the first-time this season, the K-Wings will battle a team outside of the Eastern Conference on Friday when they host the Fort Wayne Komets. All-time the K-Wings are 74-68-20 against the Western Conference, which includes a record of 22-25-9 versus the Komets.
Shutting the Door
Goaltender Tom Askey recorded his second shutout of the season last Friday in a 4-0 victory over Port Huron. Two shutouts give Askey the United Hockey League lead in that category.
Road Warriors
Kalamazoo commences the week as one of just two (Elmira) teams in the league still undefeated on the road. With a 3-0-0 record away from Wings Stadium, the K-Wings look to extend the road winning streak this Sunday in Moline, Illinois against the Quad City Mallards.
The Obscure Stat of the Week
With a 4-0 victory last Friday versus Port Huron, Kalamazoo continued their dominance over the Flags. Dating back to last season, the K-Wings have outscored the Flags 26-1 in the last three games held at Wings Stadium.
