Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (MAY 17, 2010) - The Winston-Salem Dash today announced that starting pitcher Justin Edwards has been promoted to AA Birmingham. The team will receive RHP Terry Doyle and Davidson College alumnus IF Zachary Kayne from low-A Kannapolis.
Edwards went 5-2 with a 2.20 ERA in eight starts with Winston-Salem. At the time of his departure, he was tied for the Carolina League lead in wins, ranked first in innings pitched (49.0), and third in ERA. Edwards, the Dash's opening day starting pitcher, had won three straight starts and recently put together a streak of 17 consecutive scoreless innings, a stretch that ended in the fourth inning on Saturday night.
Doyle began the season with Kannapolis and pitched extremely well for the Intimidators. In seven starts in the South Atlantic League, he went 4-2 with a 0.96 ERA. He allowed just five runs and 31 hits in 47 innings, striking out 58 batters. Doyle allowed two runs or fewer in all of his starts, and one run or fewer in six of his seven outings. He led the SAL in ERA and strikeouts, and was among the league leaders in several other categories: wins (T-2nd), innings pitched (T-3rd), WHIP (0.91, 4th), and opponents' batting average (.187, 5th).
A native a Warwick, Rhode Island, Doyle was the White Sox' 37th round selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Boston College. He spent 2009 with the Great Falls Voyagers, going 5-1 with a 2.98 ERA in 12 games (ten starts). He made his professional debut with the Bristol White Sox in 2008, going 1-2 with a 1.88 in ten relief appearances. Doyle has posted an outstanding strikeout-to-walk-ratio in his career, with 160 strikeouts and only 30 walks in 128 innings.
Doyle was a four-year player at Boston College and his best seasons were his first two, when he went a combined 11-8 with a 3.32 ERA. In his senior and junior seasons, he battled injuries and a conference switch to the ACC, going 7-13 with a 6.44 ERA. He was drafted by the Dodgers in the 21st round following his junior season, but elected to return to school.
Doyle turned in two excellent seasons pitching in the wood bat Cape Cod League. In 2006, he went 6-1 with a 2.41 ERA for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, which won the league championship. He returned to Y-D in 2007, going 7-3 with a 2.40 ERA.
As a senior at Salem (NH) High School, Doyle was the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association Class L Player of the Year, going 10-0 and serving as team captain. He helped lead Salem HS to a New Hampshire State Championship as a junior and was also the captain of the school's varsity basketball team.
Kayne comes to the Dash after recently being activated of the disabled list in Kannapolis. He has played in one game this season, going 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored on May 1 against Lakewood. He was drafted by Chicago in the 22nd round last year and made his professional debut with Great Falls. Kayne hit .266 with no home runs, 15 RBI, ten doubles, two triples, and 28 runs scored in 54 games with the Voyagers.
Kayne played college ball at nearby Davidson College and was the second-highest draft pick in school history. In his senior year, Kayne led the Wildcats with a .340 batting average and set the school's all-time single-season record for doubles with 22. He was the team's MVP in 2008, hitting .318 with one home run and 28 RBI.
The Dash roster now stands at the Carolina League limit of 25 active players.
