Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - The Carolina League announced on Monday that Wilmington Blue Rocks right-handed starter Alex Caldera has been named the league's Pitcher of the Week for the period ranging from May 10-16. It marks the third time in 2010 a Rock hurler has been so honored. Michael Montgomery took home the award in each of the season's first two weeks before heading to Double-A.
Caldera made one start over that stretch, holding the Potomac Nationals scoreless over 7.2 frames on Friday night. The 24-year-old El Centro, CA native surrendered only five hits and struck out 11, while not issuing a single free pass.
The performance came just one-third of an inning shy of equaling the longest outing of Caldera's career. He also established a new career-high in strikeouts.
On the season, Caldera is 2-2 with a 3.32 earned run average. The second-year Blue Rock has fanned 45 batters in 40.2 innings pitched, while walking only nine. He ranks third in the loop in strikeouts, strikeouts per nine innings pitched and lowest walks-per-nine-innings-pitched ratio.
Caldera last won the award during the season's second-to-final week in 2009. He is scheduled to make his next start on Wednesday evening.
The Blue Rocks continue their seven-game road trip with the first of four against the Hillcats in Lynchburg, VA tonight at 6:05 p.m. Wilmington returns home to open a six-game homestand on Friday, May 21 at 7:05 p.m. For tickets call 302-888-BLUE or visit the team's website, www.bluerocks.com.
