Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals won their third straight game on Thursday night, holding on for a 5-3 win over the Arkansas Travelers at Ray Winder Field.

Cards' starter Kevin Ool, making just his second career start, pitched into the sixth inning, while giving the Cardinals another solid performance. Ool left with a 4-1 lead, after allowing the first two runners to reach base in the sixth inning. Although the Travs would score twice to pull to within a run at 4-3, they got no closer against the Cards' bullpen, who worked four hitless innings.

Troy Cate retired all six men he faced, striking out five of them over two scoreless innings. Mark Worrell came on in the ninth and earned his first save since August 2nd by working a 1-2-3 inning. For Worrell, the save is his league-leading 27th of the year.

The Cardinals took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, as Shaun Boyd led off with a single and scored on Nick Stavinoha's RBI single.

Springfield made it 3-0 against Travs' starter Jose Arredondo (2-3) in the third, as Juan Richardson and Cody Haerther collected run-scoring hits.

The Cards added another in the fourth, as Shaun Boyd scored on a throwing error by Travs' shortstop Sean Rodriguez, putting Springfield up 4-0.

After Arkansas pulled to within a run at 4-3 in the sixth, Springfield got a big insurance run in the seventh. Mike McCoy, who finished the game 2-3 with two runs scored and his team-leading 29th stolen base, walked to open the inning against Travs' reliever Bill Edwards. After a Juan Richardson single moved McCoy to third base, Cody Haerther's fielder's choice scored McCoy for a 5-3 lead.

Ool (3-3) earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings.

Springfield improves to 26-41 in the second half and 65-70 overall. The Redbirds will send Eric Haberer (3-3) to the mound on Friday night, while Arkansas will go with Rafael Rodriguez (5-10). Game time from Ray Winder Field will be 7:10pm on Friday night.

The Springfield Cardinals wish to thank all the great fans who came out to Hammons Field and made 2006 so special.
