Springfield Cardinals News Release

Jordan Pals pitched the Springfield Cardinals to their second straight win on Wednesday evening, edging the Arkansas Travelers 3-2 at Ray Winder Field, in the opening game of the final series of the season.

Pals (8-7) picked up his first win since July 13th, going seven innings, while allowing just two runs on four hits. Pals struck out six and walked one, leaving with a 3-2 lead after seven.

Chris Russ and Cory Doyne each worked a scoreless inning of relief in holding on to the Cards' first back-to-back wins since late July.

Doyne allowed a lead-off double to Matt Brown in the ninth, but stranded him there, as he got the next three hitters to pop up, earning his sixth save of the season.

After an Aaron Peel homer in the third put the Travs up 1-0, the Cards tied it in the fourth, as Cody Haerther dropped a two-out single down the left-field line to score Nick Stavinoha.

Iker Franco led off the fifth with his ninth homer of the year against Travs' starter Nick Green (8-5), giving the Cards the lead for good at 2-1.

Springfield added a big run in the seventh, as Haerther earned a lead-off walk, then scored on Jarrett Hoffpauir's RBI, two-out double, making it 3-1.

Pals surrendered a run in the bottom of the seventh, as Bobby Wilson doubled home Matt Brown, making it 3-2. Wilson was stranded at third base though, as Pals got Arkansas catcher Tim Duff swinging for the final out of the inning.

The Cardinals improve to 25-41 in the second half and 64-70 overall. The Cards will send Kevin Ool (2-3) to the mound on Thursday, against Travs' right-hander Jose Arredondo (2-2). Game time from Ray Winder Field in Little Rock is 7:10pm.

The Springfield Cardinals wish to thank all the great fans who came out to Hammons Field and made 2006 so special!
