Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
(SAN ANTONIO, Texas) - This 2006 season has been filled with thrilling victories, great individual efforts, and a general competitiveness by a fun-to-watch Hooks' ball club. Unfortunately for the Hooks, none of these things took place Thursday night in San Antonio.
The Missions raced to a 4-0 lead in the first, got terrific pitching from starter Robert Rohrbaugh, and cruised to a 7-0 win over the Hooks in the second game of this five-game series. The Hooks have lost six in a row and are now 33-34 in the second half and 74-62 overall.
Hooks' starter Troy Patton looked sharp out of the gate, as he struck out the Missions' first two batters, Jason Bourgeois and Jesus Guzman, to open the bottom of the first inning. Yung Chi Chen, though, drew a two-out walk, and that opened the door to some serious trouble.
Wladimir Balentien ripped a double off the left field wall to plate Chen for a 1-0 Missions' lead. Marshall Hubbard followed with a single to score Balentien, making it 2-0 San Antonio. Mike Wilson then launched his 12th homer of the year over the wall in left, and the Missions were up 4-0.
Patton (2-5) settled down after that rocky start and tossed five shutout innings before leaving the game. The lefty retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced, and at one point set down 10 men in a row.
Rohrbaugh (5-5) had a relatively easy evening, only once allowing a runner past second base. He scattered six hits over seven innings and walked just one while striking out four. He nearly allowed a run in the third when Jonny Ash tried to score from second on a hard single to center by Tike Redman, but Balentien's perfect one-hop throw from center to catcher Luis Oliveros got Ash for the final out in the inning.
The Missions would add three runs in the eighth off reliever David Rollandini, though two of the three runs were unearned on two Hooks' throwing errors. Balentien added another RBI double in the frame.
The Hooks will try again Friday to snap out of their current funk when they send Ronnie Martinez (2-1, 6.37) to the hill against Yorman Bazardo (6-4, 3.56). Friday's game gets under way at 7:05 pm.
