Wichita stops Tulsa again
August 31, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Wichita Wranglers News Release
The Wichita Wranglers defeated the Tulsa Drillers 3-1 Thursday night for their second straight win in the five-game series that will conclude the 2006 regular season. The Drillers offense was again held in check, being limited to only five hits for the second time in as many nights.
The Drillers lost despite another strong outing from starting pitcher Marc Kaiser. The right-hander worked eight innings and was credited with his Texas League-leading fourth complete game.
Only two of the three runs scored by Wichita were earned. The Wranglers ended Kaiser's scoreless streak at 19 2/3 innings with an unearned run in the second inning.
Tulsa tied the game in the top of the third when Alvin Colina singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out base hit by Jordan Czarniecki.
Wichita closed the scoring with a pair of runs in the fifth. Adam Donachie led off with a double and moved to third on a base hit by Chris Lubanski. Alex Gordon broke the 1-1 tie with a single to right field. Dee Brown then upped the lead to 3-1 with a sacrifice fly.
The loss dropped Kaiser's season record to 10-10, while Wichita starter Tyler Lumsden improved to 11-5 with the win.
"They're all quality hitters that give you an idea of what it is going to be like at the next level," said Kaiser of the Wichita lineup.
Kaiser added that the Drillers want to win but must also prepare for their North Division Playoff Series that will begin against the Wranglers Tuesday night. "We will come back battling the next three games and get ready for the playoffs next week," he said.
Joe Gaetti led Tulsa's offense with two hits while both Lubanski and Gordon collected two hits for Wichita.
The well-pitched game took only 1 hour and 57 minutes to complete, the shortest 9-inning game of the year for the Drillers.
In game three of the series Friday night, Steven Register (4-9, 5.34 ERA) will pitch for the Drillers against Junior Herndon (11-6, 5.40 ERA) of the Wranglers. First pitch will take place at 7:30PM.
