SEA DOGS HOLD ON SATURDAY NIGHT - The Portland Sea Dogs edged out the Richmond Flying Squirrels last night at The Diamond in a 2-1 victory. In the top of the fourth inning, Hudson Potts blasted a two-out homer to left field, his seventh of the season, and the Sea Dogs were on the board, 1-0. The Sea Dogs plated another run in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Christian Koss singled to right field and then scored on an RBI double to left field by Potts, extending Portland's lead, 2-0. Richmond scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. After Mike Gigliotti doubled off Portland reliever Caleb Simpson, he scored on a force out at second base and the Flying Squirrels were on the board, 2-1.
MURPHY SPINS A GEM - Chris Murphy (4-5) was terrific for Portland in his 13th start of the year. He tossed 6.0 shutout innings allowing just one hit while walking three and striking out eight. Murphy lowers his ERA to 2.58. He now owns the third-best ERA in the Eastern League (2.58) and has the third-most strikeouts in the league (91) and is holding opposing hitters to a .170 batting average which is the lowest in the Eastern League.
HUDSON POTTS HAS A NIGHT - Infielder Hudson Potts went 2-for-3 last night with a run, double and home run, increasing his batting average to .214. Over his last 10 games, Potts is hitting .424 with four doubles, a home run and three RBI. He has struck out six times while also drawing six walks.
PORTLAND STRIKES FIRST FOR ONCE - For the first time this series, the Sea Dogs were first to score against the Flying Squirrels last night with Hudson Potts' solo home run in the fourth inning. Portland is 19-12 when they score first this season but 11-26 when their opponent strikes first.
THOMPSON REMAINS LOCKED IN - RHP Jake Thompson tossed another perfect inning last night, extending his shutout streak to ten games. During this streak, he has made nine appearances pitching 16.1 innings allowing six hits while walking six and striking out 17.
TWO NEW ADDITIONS TO PORTLAND - The Red Sox have promoted infielder Alex Binelas and catcher Stephen Scott. Binelas is ranked as the No. 17 prospect for Boston, according to Baseball America. He has hit .245 with 10 doubles, 14 HR and 43 RBI through 58 games with A+ Greenville to begin 2022. Scott was hitting .188 through 37 games with A+ Greenville with 8 doubles, 3 home runs and 14 RBI.
WHAT'S NEXT - The Sea Dogs will travel back to Portland following today's game to open a six-game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats beginning Tuesday, June 28th at 6pm. Promotional nights for the series include Margaritaville Night (June 30th) while the Maine Red Snappers return on July 1st. The series concludes Sunday, July 3rd at 6pm with postgame fireworks.
THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - June 26, 2010: In the largest crowd at New Britain Stadium (8,497), the Sea Dogs trailed 5-1 entering the seventh inning, but scored six runs to beat the Rock Cats 8-5. Portland had five straight hits during the inning, receiving run-scoring hits by Nate Spears, Ray Chang, Luis Exposito and Anthony Rizzo.
PITCHING MATCHUP - LHP Rio Gomez will open for the Sea Dogs today followed by LHP Jay Groome. Groome faced the Flying Squirrels in the first game of this season on Tuesday, June 21st and tossed 6.0 innings allowing two runs on two hits while walking two. He gave up one home run and tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts.
