Walks and Rain Help Harrisburg Outlast Akron 8-5
June 26, 2022 - Eastern League (EL)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
The Harrisburg Senators scored big early and survived a late rally to outlast the Akron RubberDucks 8-5 on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park. The RubberDucks loss and Richmond's win gives the Flying Squirrels the first half Southwest division title and playoff berth.
Turning Point
Akron struck for four quick runs to open the eighth inning and looked for more with two on and two out, but mother nature halted the rally with an hour and 20-minute rain delay. When play resumed, Harrisburg reliever Andrew Lee struck out Chris Roller to keep the Senators lead intact.
Mound Presence
Gavin Williams got the start for Akron and looked sharp quickly striking out the first two batters. But then a tight strike zone and patience by Senators batters drove Williams pitch count up as the righty only worked two thirds of an inning and surrendered one run. Randy Labaut tossed one inning and gave up four runs. Brett Daniels followed with two and a third innings and gave up two runs. Carlos Vargas threw two scoreless innings. Robert Broom pitched two scoreless innings. Thomas Ponticelli tossed one inning and surrendered one run.
Duck Tales
The RubberDucks offense laid dormant until Jose Tena belted a home run over the right field fence in the seventh bringing the score to 7-1 Harrisburg. Brayan Rocchio tacked on a solo home run to make the score 7-2 Harrisburg in the bottom of the eighth. Back-to-back walks from George Valera and Jhonkensy Noel extended the inning and Micah Pries hit a three-run home run to score three more in the eighth and make it 7-5 Harrisburg.
